The elderly population with dementia is rapidly growing in South Korea. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dementia and oral health in 197 subjects aged ≥65 years. The questionnaire included questions on subjective health status, subjective health concern, subjective oral health status and behavior, mastication ability, Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), and Korean Dementia Screening Questionnaires (KDSQ). Oral examination was conducted by a single dentist to evaluate upper or lower denture use, and determine the numbers of remaining and functioning teeth, including implant and fixed prosthesis. The subjects who required a dementia test (KDSQ-C [cognition] of ≥6) had significant differences in systemic disease prevalence rate, subjective health status, subjective health concern, KDSQ-V (vascular disease) score, KDSQ-D (depression) score, subjective oral treatment need, key food mastication ability and OHIP-14 score compared to the healthy subjects. The proportion of denture wearers, total remaining teeth, total functioning teeth, toothbrushing frequency, oral pain severity, symptoms of periodontal disease, subjective oral health status, and subjective oral health concern showed no significant differences between the two groups. KDSQ-C and OHIP-14 scores showed a strong positive relationship, while KDSQ-C score and total remaining teeth or key food mastication ability showed a weak negative relationship. In the multiple regression analysis, the KDSQ-D, KDSQ-V, and OHIP-14 scores influenced the KDSQ-C scores. We suggest a relationship between oral health and cognitive impairment.
Dental composite resins are widely used in dental restorations. However, their clinical application is limited by the occurrence of secondary caries. As strontium-modified phosphate-based glass is known to have long-term antibacterial properties, in this study, we incorporated a strontium-modified phosphate-based glass microfiller at 3, 6, and 9 wt.% concentrations into a commercially available composite resin and investigated the mechanical properties (flexural strength, elastic modulus, and microhardness), ion release characteristics, and color of the resultant resins. In addition, we examined the antibacterial effects of the composite resins against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The mechanical properties of the Sr-modified phosphate-based glass groups differed only slightly from those of the control group (p > 0.05). However, the optical density at 600 nm of S. mutans incubated on the experimental group was significantly lower compared to that observed with the control (p < 0.05) both before and after thermocycling between 5 and 55 ℃ for 850 cycles (dwell time: 45 s). This study demonstrates that the addition of the Sr-containing phosphate-based glass filler to composite resins can enhance their long-term antibacterial activity and help prevent secondary caries.
The purpose of this study was to compare physical and biodegradable properties of 3D printed resorbable membranes that are used for guided tissue regenerations in periodontal tissues. Three types of 3D printed membranes (two types of non β-TCP and one type of β-TCP) were considered. The form and element compositions of 3D printed membranes were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Porosity and pore size were measured using Micro-CT. Also, tensile strength, biodegradability tests were performed. Statistical analyses were carried in tensile strength and cell viability test (p<0.05). The result of SEM images with EDS analyses showed linear layers of lattice structure with presence of C and O in all groups. There was a slight difference in Ca and P among some groups. Tensile strength was significantly different among all groups (p<0.05), and biodegradability showed that the group containing β-TCP resulted in the fastest degradation rate. Therefore, the results of this study concluded that the 3D printed resorbable membrane has variable physical and biodegradable properties for clinical use, where such information would be useful to be considered for the future development of related products and clinical application of the products.
