This study aimed to assess the characteristics of exposure to both PM2.5 and black carbon (BC) among subway workers. A total of 61 subway workers, including 26, 23, and 12 subway station managers, maintenance engineers, and train drivers, respectively, were investigated in 2018. Real-time measurements of airborne PM2.5 and BC were simultaneously conducted around the breathing zones of workers. Maintenance engineers had the highest average levels of exposure to both PM2.5 and BC (PM2.5, 76 µg/m3; BC, 9.3 µg/m3), followed by train drivers (63.2 µg/m3, 5.9 µg/m3) and subway station managers (39.7 µg/m3, 2.2 µg/m3). In terms of the relationship between mass concentrations of PM2.5 and BC, train drivers demonstrated the strongest correlation (R = 0.72), indicating that the proportion of BC contained in PM2.5 is relatively steady. The average proportion of BC in PM2.5 among maintenance engineers (13.0%) was higher than that among train drivers (9.4%) and subway station managers (6.4%). Univariate and mixed effect multiple analyses demonstrated the type of task and worksite to be significant factors affecting exposure levels in maintenance engineers and subway station managers. The use of diesel engine motorcars in tunnel maintenance was found to be a key contributor to PM2.5 and BC exposure levels among subway workers.
This study aimed to evaluate the variation in PM 10 concentration and identify the factors influencing it in Korean subways during the past decade. The PM 10 measured internally by subway companies according to legal requirements was categorized by the subway's characteristics, which were statistically examined using a mixed effects model to identify the relevant parameters. The average levels monitored near or on the platforms and in the waiting rooms ranged from 53.9 to 92.4 µg m −3 , remaining below the Indoor Air Quality Control Act regulatory standard of 150 µg m −3. However, the levels monitored on the platforms far exceeded the average yearly atmospheric environmental standard (50 µg m −3). Based on both univariate and multiple analyses, several subway characteristics, including the presence of a platform screen door (PSD), were found to significantly correlate with the concentration, although slight differences in the significant factors were detected between the cities. Particularly, the absence of transfer lines and the presence of a PSD reduced the platform concentration, except at Busan and during specific years.
The objectives of this study to characterize exposure to respirable elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC) and total carbon (TC) in relation to waste-handling activities and vehicle characteristics among workers who collect household wastes, and to examine the relationships among EC, OC and TC. A total of 72 household waste collectors were selected for exposure assessment over a full workday and most (70 of 72) exposures were collected from diesel emissions that underwent catalytic after-treatment by diesel particulate filters (DPFs). The exposure assessments were conducted from June through September 2014. Airborne EC and OC from the breathing zone were collected on pre-fired quartz filters and quantified using the thermal optical reflectance method. The average EC exposure level of the household waste collectors was 7.2 µg m -3 with a range of 2.0-30.4 µg m ), truck age (< 10 year-old vs. ≥ 10 year-old), type of waste collection job (collector vs. driver), current smoking status (yes vs. no) and month were found to significantly influence the level of TC exposure (n = 70, adjusted R 2 = 0.56, p < 0.0001). The average exposure to EC of household waste collectors can be categorized into the relatively low exposure group when compared to other DE exposure jobs. TC was not a best surrogate for DE exposure in household waste collection environments because it was affected by other OC interferences that were not generated from diesel engines.
Rationale: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common type of peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities. The peroneal nerve is usually compressed at the lateral aspect of the fibular head. Compression by ganglion cysts are one of the numerous underlying etiologies for peroneal nerve neuropathy and are most frequently located around the fibular neck and proximal tibiofibular joint. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an extraneural ganglion cyst located at the level of the distal thigh that resulted in compressive peroneal neuropathy. Patient concerns: We report a case of a 56-year-old man with sudden onset of left foot drop and gait disturbance caused by an extraneural ganglion cyst located in the popliteal fossa. Diagnosis: Electrodiagnosis (EDX) suggested a peroneal nerve lesion. Subsequently, diagnostic ultrasonography (USG) revealed a cystic mass located within the left side of the supracondylar area of femur. Further magnetic resonance imaging confirmed that the mass was located at the proximal of popliteal fossa. Interventions: Surgical excision was performed using a direct posterior approach. The cystic mass was compressing the common peroneal nerve, and was carefully and completely removed ensuring that all nerve branches were protected. Outcomes: A histopathologic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of a ganglion cyst. There were no postoperative complications. Two months after the surgery, follow-up USG revealed no evidence of cyst recurrence or residual lesions. Six months after the surgery, the ankle dorsiflexor motor power improved and he experienced less pain and hypoesthesia. Lessons: Physicians should bear in mind that the peroneal neuropathy can occur because of the ganglion cyst in the distal thigh. The thorough evaluation of EDX and USG is crucial for the early diagnosis and surgical intervention, although there is no abnormal finding around the fibular neck.
