On the polymerization of unsaturated monomers which contain other highly active functional groups in addition to vinyl, three-dimensional polymers are easily formed. The possibility of synthesis of soluble macromolecules which are not three-dimensional has not been sufficiently studied. The present work deals with the preparation of linear polymers from active polyfunctioiial compounds on the polymerization of: (1) unsaturated compounds which contain methylol amide groups and (2) diolefin derivatives.Monomers of methylolacryl-and methacrylamides were first prepared several years ago. I t has also been demonstrated that the polymerizaton yields insoluble, three-dimensional polymers. The properties and chemical reactions as well as the synthesis of these substances were studied further, with the participation of the authors of the present communication. 2-4 On the photopolymerization of methylolmethacrylamide, a linear polymer was obtained.2 However, methylolacrylamide under analogous conditioiis formed a three-dimensional polymer network. Therefore further work mas directed to the study of the chemical affinity of the reactions of the methylol group.The studies established the intermediate formation of di (methacrylamide) dimethyl ester, and the influence of the pH of the environment on side reactions which took place between the monomer and the polymer. In the course of these studies, we also succeeded in preparing a linear product which was quite stable on storage. This product, prepared in conjunction with L.
