Lupus and thymomaSir-We read with interest the article by Bozzolo et al on the association between thymoma and SLE.1 We have observed recently two other patients with this association and reviewed 35 cases reported in the literature. We agree that the occurrence of the two diseases is variable. The two diagnoses were concurrent in 17 out of 37 patients, thymoma preceded SLE in 12 patients with a delay ranging from 1-15y, and in 8 patients, the appearance of thymoma occurred 1-10y after the diagnosis of SLE was made.2 As in the literature, the clinical outcome of thymectomy on SLE in our patients was variable: no changes in one case, and improvement in the second patient. We want to outline that the clinical presentation of SLE reported in the literature has no remarkable features except for age, median 50.1y, and sex ratio, 4.1.In conclusion, patients should be followed after thymectomy because autoimmune disease, particularly SLE may develop belatedly.
