Presupposition is one way of expressing irony which is a communicative behavior in that the literal meaning and background assumptions associated with an utterance differ in systematic ways from the reality as assumed by the interlocutors. Typically, the intended meaning of ironical utterances is the opposite of the literal meaning. Irony is perceived through a complex interaction between an utterance and its context and sense many social functions. The purpose of this paper is to explore the presupposition role in the recognition of irony in Middleton (1989) cynical tragedy. The issue of controversy in irony research depends on what features of irony people endorse. Thus, a more comprehensive view of irony, the implicit display theory of verbal irony is herewith proposed. Discussion of the findings suggests that implicit display theory and the tool of presupposition can account for indirect effects on the degree of irony.
There are plentiful studies exploring gender emotional differences. Gender and emotion stereotypes make people believe that there are certain emotions associated with each gender and this is supported by many studies. The purpose of this research is to analyze the emotional expressions of Saudi men and women in Instagram, a social networking service. This paper aims to explore the Saudi differences of emotional expressions. Also, if gender emotion stereotypes apply on these expressions or not. Data is collected through corpus analysis of Arabic comments for a certain post on Instagram. The results of this study demonstrate that there are differences in Saudis' expressions of emotions in which each gender uses different expressions. Additionally, gender stereotypes of emotions are applied to their emotional expressions that is men express negative emotions more while women express positive emotions. Another result is that women are found to be more emotional than men. Overall, the findings contribute to increase understanding of online emotional expressions of both Saudi genders.
This study identifies and brings light to how people express themselves and interact during mealtime. Furthermore, this study explains and understands linguistic variations and diversity in communities that differ socially and geographically. The researcher has collected selected spoken data from various scenes of welcoming guests at home during a meal and offering food in Jeddah community, and some other data from South East Asian neighbors who have lived a long time in Saudi Arabia and know a lot about the culture and traditions. The methodology used is a qualitative observational participant research method in which the researcher has intervened in the environment. The researcher has also used contextual analysis that focuses on the role of the group context on the actions and attitudes of individuals. It is found out that through ‘conversational routines’ people understand better and tolerates each other’s words and attitudes. By this, they can have genuine acceptance of their shortcomings. Those actions may include: improving relationships with others, having time to listen, showing empathy with others, being candid, forthright no matter what it takes, being honest and sincere, and being able to develop an empowered and positive attitude. There is more beyond what we could readily hear and see but also about our perceptions about signs and wonders and mental images that correspond to some distinct entities, or to its essential features thus playing an important part in the use of reason or language. This article deals with written messages in the form of verses from the Holy Qur'an. To be specific, we have chosen some verses in Surat Joseph with prevalent usage of signs to accomplish its ends. Under the tradition of Peircean model, semiotic application is broader and fundamental. Given that the Story of Joseph is widely read and reinterpreted several times, we have offered and injected some fresh revelations as spiritually discerned during our research. Any slight variations in/by the 'interpretant' are treated as a welcome development as in all fields of endeavors that further give richness and beauty dependent on cultures, social and geographical diversities. We adhere to the idea that variety is the spice of live, that we have come to learn and accept our differences. However, consistencies are relevant and warranted in areas where interpretation of the attributes of our Creator Allah is concerned -His unlimited love for mankind reigns supreme.
