The study aims to investigate the speech acts of international students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya in giving complaints. This study focuses on the complaint speech acts and the politeness strategy which are produced by International students who have different cultural background. This study used qualitative approach because it observed the complaints speech acts of International students in applying the politeness strategy. There were four participants consist of three males and one female. They came from Mexico, Thailand, East Timor and Togo. The data were taken by purposive sampling. The data contained the complaints which were delivered by the international students conducted through chatting on WhatsApp. Those were collected, categorized, analyzed and concluded. Finally, it is inferred that complaint speech acts which used by showing irritation or disapproval expression and blame. Thus, in politeness strategy, social distance (age and status) and cultural background induce the way of giving complaints. Bald on record politeness strategy is used in the culture which has directness term. Moreover, negative politeness is applied by the complainer who has culture in indirectness term. Bald on record politeness strategy has the chance for face threatening acts (FTA) in the other hand, negative politeness strategy can avoid the FTA.
This study aims to investigate the type of adjectives in the most frequent adjectives and also the use of the adjective functions on academic writing about COVID-19. This study was conducted by using a corpus tool named sketchengine. The method of this study was a mixed-method by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The source of the data was corpus about COVID-19 academic writing due to the fact that COVID-19 has been the trending topic around the globe and also became an international concern. There were several data collection steps; those were first, knowing the most frequent adjective in the COVID-19 corpus by choosing a wordlist. Second, the data were taken 20 the most frequent adjectives used in COVID-19 corpus because 20 data have already represented the most frequent adjectives. Third, it chose the concordance to comprehend the function of the adjective in the COVID-19 corpus. Fourth, 20 the most frequent adjectives were inputted one at a time on concordance. Fifth, the data were analyzed based on the related theory. Finally, it is inferred that the adjective type on the most frequent adjective is a describing adjective, which has the function to frame the condition, situation and characteristic of the noun on the COVID-19 cases.
The study aims at finding out how the children in Pattani, Thailand acquire their first language acquisition. The study is focused on the children of three-year-old due to the fact that they are able invited to communicate in two ways and already comprehend the time when their turn to talk and when other person’s turn to talk. Therefore, the researcher wants to research the utterances in process of first language acquisition in phonology. The study is conducted to address the language acquisition in Melayu Pattani due to the fact that it does not identify in Melayu Malaysia. In addition, the study uses a descriptive qualitative method for analyzing and describing the production of children's utterances. The data were taken by recording and interviewing the children. Finally, it is inferred that children absolutely do the simplification, such as substitution, omission, and assimilation to help them to produce the utterance when they make the conversation.
This study aims to describe how the participants (senders and receivers) flout conversational maxims in short messages. In this study, the source is taken from short messages that are sent via a provider because nowadays most people do communication with others using mobile phone. This study uses Grice’s theory of cooperative principle is used especially the flouting of maxims (maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner). All kinds of those flouting that exist in short messages are analyzed, which are delivered by the participants (senders and receivers). This research uses qualitative descriptive. The utterances produced by the participants, the senders and the receivers, when they were conversing with each others in term of short messages or texting (SMS) were analyzed and described. The data of the research were written data, collected from the utterances, which contain flouting performed by the senders and the receivers in the short messages or texting (SMS). The result of the research shows that in maxim of quantity, they flout by adding more information and giving a little information. In maxim of quality, all of the participants flout it by saying what they believed false. In maxim of relevance, the participants flouted it by saying irrelevant responses. In maxim of manner, moreover, the participants flouted it by saying convoluted words which are extremely long-winded. The conversational maxim are mostly flouted by the participants (sender and receiver) in the short massages is maxim of quantity. This study aims to investigate the English writing assignment of Indonesian college students. This study focuses on the use of theme system and thematic progression in the text which was produced by the learners in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya. This study used the systemic functional linguistics as approach in teaching and learning in writing class. This study used the qualitative approach with descriptive qualitative as the method. It was conducted because this study observed about the writing assignment which would be elaborated descriptively. The data were taken by using the purposive sampling. The participants were 3 rd year students which consisted of twenty students. The observation and interview were conducted as instrument in data collection. There were several steps conducted in analyzing the data. They were first, the students' pre-writing assignment were read carefully by the researcher. Then, those writing assignment were classified in to three classifications, they were low, middle and high achiever. Those pre-writing assignments were analyzed based on the SFL's theory about theme system and thematic progression. Then, the students' post-writing assignment were read intensively by the researcher. Then, those post-writing assignments were classified based on the previous classification. Then, those were analyzed based on SFL's theory in theme system and thematic progression. Finally, it is inferred that there is the significant process between writing assignment and systemic functional linguistics approach. The students can construct the message or information in the clause by using the theme system which will be turned to be the larger text. The student (high and middle learners) can produce the text cohesively and coherently by applying the thematic progression. In the other hand, there is several texts which produced by the low learners is not understandable to be read.
