The assessment of service needs among persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) is important to identify a person's needs, strengths and preferences. One commonly used instrument for service needs assessment is Resident Assessment Instrument Intellectual Disabilities (interRAI ID). However, there is limited evidence of the experiences of using interRAI ID for assessing the service needs of persons with ID from nursing staff and nursing managers' perspective. The aim of this study was to explore the suitability of the interRAI ID instrument (version Fi2020.1) for assessing the service needs and functional development of persons with ID as described by nursing staff and nursing managers working in a housing service. The data were collected using focus group interviews (n = 3) in May 2020. The interviews were conducted in units providing housing services for persons with ID (n = 6). The interview groups consisted of nursing staff (n = 22) and nursing managers (n = 6). The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. The experiences of nursing staff and nursing managers fell under three main categories: (1) the assessment process; (2) possibilities to use the assessment data and (3) implementation experience. The interRAI ID instrument is suitable and useful for the systematic assessment of the health, functional capacity and service needs of persons with ID. In the future, effective and evidence-based methods are needed to promote the assessment skills of nursing staff and to use assessment data in nursing practice as well as nursing management.
The purpose of this pilot study was to explore connection of an educational intervention on the competence of health care educators and educator candidates (n=11) in digital pedagogy as a part of national TerOpe project. An educational intervention, Basics of Digital Pedagogy was developed by the TerOpe project’s experts. The participating educators and educator candidates of the educational intervention were recruited from the universities and university of applied sciences, which were involved in TerOpe project. All the participants of the educational interventions were invited to take part in this study. The educational intervention was conducted during spring 2019. Pre- and post-tests were implemented digitally by using an Educators’ and Educator Candidates’ Competence in Digital Pedagogy self-assessment instrument (OODI), which was developed for this study. The OODI includes 32 items divided in six digital competence areas professional engagement, digital resources, teaching and learning, assessment, empowering learners and facilitating learners’ digital competence. The data was analysed statistically. The self-assessed level of overall competence in digital pedagogy and competence in all competence areas of digital pedagogy increased statistically significantly during the intervention. The educational intervention used in this study seems to increase educators’ self-assessed competence in digital pedagogy. We recommend that all educators be encouraged to conduct continuous education on the basics of digital pedagogy.
BackgroundDysfunctions related to pelvic floor muscles such as urinary incontinence and pelvic pain are common among pregnant and postpartum women. With properly functioning pelvic floor muscles, it is possible to prevent these dysfunctions. Still, shared understanding about effective exercise interventions is missing. The aim of this review of reviews was to form a summary of the existing evidence about effective exercise interventions on pelvic floor muscle function of pregnant and postpartum women. MethodsNine databases were searched by June 12, 2020. PICO was used to define the eligibility criteria. Population: pregnant or postpartum women, interventions: activity-based interventions aiming to affect the function of pelvic floor muscles, comparators: waiting list or usual care, outcomes: disorders concerning pelvic floors muscles, study design: systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Screening and quality assessment were conducted by two researchers separately. The data were extracted and analyzed narratively. ResultsAltogether 20 systematic reviews reporting findings from 147 original studies were included. The methodological quality of the included reviews was mainly good, overall scores varying from 6/11–11/11. The results showed it may be possible to reduce low-back and pelvic pain as well as the severity of pain with exercise interventions during pregnancy but no association with odds of low back and pelvic pain during the postpartum period were found. With prenatal exercise interventions, it is possible to decrease the risk of urinary incontinence during pregnancy and the postnatal period, but the differences between the control group and the intervention group seem to vanish in the late postnatal period. The results were carefully optimistic within postnatal exercise interventions that decreased pelvic pain, reduction in vaginal bulging and pelvic organ prolapse, but more research is needed. ConclusionsOverall, the level of evidence was low. It seems that with exercise interventions it could be possible to prevent and provide care for the disorders of pelvic floor muscles to some extent. However, more high-quality research is needed to support decision making in the health care systems and to get evidence-based knowledge guiding health professionals working with pregnant and postpartum women.
