Abstract

Covid-19 Pandemic has changed the teaching and learning processes of all education levels from offline classroom into online classroom. This situation forces all schools and universities to be familiar with blended learning. It is such an advantage for Universities that have already implemented blended learning in their teaching and learning processes. The full implementation of blended learning raises various perceptions from both lecturer and students. This study employed a qualitative research method to investigate the students’ perceptions on the implementation of blended learning in English for Mathematics. This study was conducted by using a qualitative method to investigate the students’ voices on the implementation of blended learning in English for Mathematics class. Six student participants who attended English for Mathematics in English Language Education Department of a state university were involved in this study. To gather the data, the researchers conducted an interview with the participants at the end of the semester. The interview was conducted in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session. It is found that most students have positive perceptions toward the implementation of blended learning in their teaching and learning processes. The participants stated that the implementation of blended learning in their class facilitates students to deepen their understanding about the materials, blended learning promotes independent learning, and blended learning enables students to experience various kinds of learning media.

This research explored the pronunciation errors produced by the students in their vlog projects and the linguistics factors that contributed to their errors. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the vlogs made by the students which were uploaded on Youtube channels. The participants were 30 students of the Air Transport Management study program in STTKD Yogyakarta. The data collection technique was done by observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by applying qualitative data analysis. The data were classified using the theory from Bonaventura, Herron, and Menzel (2000). The results showed that there were 67 pronunciation errors existed in the vlog projects. The mispronunciations could be categorized into three types of errors, namely: the problems of non-native sounds as many as 34%, the carry-over of pronunciation regularities from the mother tongue as many as 45%, and the over-generalization of target language (L2) regularities as many as 21%. It is expected that the findings can help students diagnose their errors and mistakes in English pronunciation and later can motivate them to improve their English proficiencies. Besides, it can help the teachers develop strategies to minimize students’ errors in pronunciation.
Virtual Flipped Classroom (VFC) is a learning model that is suitable to be applied during the Covid-19 pandemic where the learning activities are mostly conducted online. The VFC in this study combines synchronous and asynchronous learning by using Schoology as the Learning Management System (LMS) and Zoom as the means to facilitate direct interaction between the lecturer and the students. This model was implemented to improve the student's motivation in learning English even in the pandemic situation. The objective of this study is to investigate the implementation of the VFC learning model to improve students’ motivation to learn. It is a qualitative study conducting action research. The participants were 47 students. The data were gathered by observation, sharing questionnaires, and interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively, while the statistical data were used to support the qualitative data. The results showed that most of the students were motivated to learn English even though it was during the situation of pandemic Covid-19. They said that this model improves the students’ creativity, autonomous learning, and responsibility to have a self-learning process that motivated them in learning English

Speaking skill is an English language competence that is very important for effective communication either in educational or professional environment. This skill is also required by students of Nursing Study Program to support their academic and professional development. However, students still have limited exposure to English materials related to their field of science. Active English for Nursing (AFORN) application, therefore, it was elaborated to support the students' needs. AFORN is an Android-based application for learning English speaking skills as complementary learning media that are accessible at anytime and anywhere. The objective of this study was to observe how AFORN helped students enhance their speaking skills. This was an Action Research project. The subjects of this study were the second-semester students of Nursing Study Program. The data were collected by doing observation, interview, and tests. There were four stages in this study, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The focus of the Action stages was implementing AFORN as an m-learning medium to help students learn English based on their own pace. The result of this study shows that there was an improvement of students' speaking skills in terms of vocabulary, grammar, language expressions, and pronunciations. Besides the students became more motivated to learn English after using the alternative learning medium i.e. AFORN which could be flexibly accessed through their Android-based gadgets.
