Welcome to EVALITA 2020! EVALITA is the evaluation campaign of Natural Language Processing and Speech Tools for Italian. EVALITA is an initiative of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics (AILC, http://www.ai-lc.it) and it is endorsed by the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA, http://www.aixia.it) and the Italian Association for Speech Sciences (AISV, http://www.aisv.it).This volume includes the reports of both task organisers and participants to all of the EVALITA 2020 challenges. In the 2020 edition, we coordinated the organization of 14 different tasks belonging to five research areas, being: (i) Affect, Hate, and Stance, (ii) Creativity and Style, (iii) New Challenges in Long-standing Tasks, (iv) Semantics and Multimodality, Time and Diachrony.The volume is opened by an overview to the EVALITA 2020 campaign, in which we describe the tasks, provide statistics on the participants and task organizers as well as our supporting sponsors. The abstract of the keynote speech made by Preslav Nakov titled "Flattening the Curve of the COVID-19 Infodemic: These Evaluation Campaigns Can Help!" is also included in this collection.Due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional workshop was held online, where several members of the Italian NLP Community presented the results of their research. Despite the circumstances, the workshop represented an occasion for all participants from both academic institutions and private companies to disseminate their work and results and to share ideas through online sessions dedicated to each task and a general discussion during the plenary event.We carried on with the tradition of the "Best system across tasks" award. As in 2018, it represented an incentive for students, IT developers and researchers to push the boundaries of the state of the art by facing tasks in new ways, even if not winning.
Affordances are central to consider how sociality and technology intertwine. However, while this entanglement propelled the popularity of the term, it also persistently connected the social and the technical. It is argued how considering affordances as eminently social opens up analytical possibilities to consider cultural, individual, and social contexts, and how these in turn can affect social action in digital environments. This means considering affordances as intersubjective and co-constructed, and posing them in relation to sociological tenets such as that of the social situation. Through 26 interviews with a variety of Reddit users, results suggest how affordances are understood and employed relationally to navigate complex social contexts, to infer dominant social norms and cultural codes and, once internalized, are deployed to sanction deviations or promote compliance to them. It is shown how the concepts of affordances and social situations can be fruitfully employed as an entry point into the cultural and social dynamics of groups and digital environments. Contextually, it challenges the idea of the social situation as a sociological concept rooted in physical interaction.
The present publication is devoted to the studies of the structure of the Langmuir-Blodget films of (methylacylamino)azobenzene derivatives and their electrical properties. Structural studies of monolayers have been carried out by Atom Force Microscopy. The molecules are closely packed in an hexagonal crystalline array. UV irradiation causes a rearrangement of the molecules and a significant structural modification in the monolayer are observed in the frontier region between two crystalline domains of different orientations. The anisotropy of dc conductivity is observed in multilayer assemblies. A low dc conductivity in the bulk ofsample ofthe order of1lO'°1O'3 S/cm is obtained. In the case of in-plane conductivity the value of conductivity is of the order of lO8lOb0 S/cm. The several sets of hole trapping states are situated at energy depth of E=0.55±0.03eV and E =0.48±0.03eV with the value of the total density of given set of traps of the order of 1012 cm3. The frequency dependence of capacitance and conductance is nonlinear, with capacitance values decreasing exponentially with higher frequencies while the conductance increases gradually. The behavior is one typical for low mobility materials and the conduction mechanism can be explained in terms of hopping conduction between localized states. The linear dependence of dc in-plane conductivity on relative humidity was observed.
Online pornography, like other forms of cultural production, is increasingly subject to processes of platformization. While research has focused on the diffusion of online pornography and its broader implications, less attention has been paid to the algorithmic infrastructures through which platforms distribute and manage pornographic content, and how this might reiterate socially embedded views and perspectives. To fill this gap, we consider how Pornhub, currently the leading porn platform, establishes the gender identity of its users, and how this affects the structure of the platform and the distribution and recommendation of content within it. We collected data about 1.600 variations of Pornhub’s homepages, as well as data about 25.000 videos suggested to 10 accounts with differing self-declared gender identities. Through this data and an analysis of the signup procedure, we underline how Pornhub segments, distributes, and manages content based on the profiling of its users, increasingly following the logics of the platformization of content. Findings point to how Pornhub’s algorithmic suggestions and the structure of the platform concur to reiterate a heteronormative perspective on sexual desire, sexuality, and gender identities.
