A reader module at 60 GHz for high data-rate short-range backscattering-based communications is presented. The reader consists of a CMOS-based oscillator, amplifiers, and a mixer on a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate. The filter, power splitter, and antennas are directly patterned on the LTCC. All millimeter-wave components are contained within the module and the only interfaces to the module are the IF and bias lines. Transmit power of the module is +11.6-dBm effective isotropic radiated power with an IF bandwidth of 400 MHz. The LTCC module measures 13 24 mm 2 and has a dc power consumption of 130 mW. Reception of a 20-MHz square wave from a tag 5 cm apart from the reader is demonstrated; the suggested millimeter-wave identification concept enables a 10 2 -10 3 -fold data-rate increase in comparison to the present near-field communication technique, with similar size, range, and power consumption of the reader. Index Terms-Backscattering modulation, CMOS, low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC), millimeter-wave identification (MMID), monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC), RF identification (RFID), 60 GHz.
We studied the epidemiology, incidence, and outcome among children and adolescents admitted for possible replantation or revascularisation of an injured upper extremity during the period 1998-2008. Twenty-nine patients with 38 finger injuries were admitted. Eight of the 29 had a severe amputation injury. The annual rate of all amputations in the referral area of 300,000 children was 0.42/100,000 children/year and total amputation injuries 0.18/100,000 children/year. Most injuries occurred in patients aged 12-15 years. The survival after total amputations was 6/14 and after subtotal amputations 13/15. Mean total active movement after replantation was 84° (n = 5) and after revascularisation 152° (n = 10). Four patients were re-examined in the outpatient department and nine answered a questionnaire. Cold intolerance was reported by most of the patients. Patients' satisfaction with outcome of treatment was good.
European Space Agency is developing EMS (European Mobile System) land mobile system for voice and data communications. Two different antenna concepts have been realised for a mobile terminal. The first one is a rotating antenna consisting of two radiating elements. The second one is an electronic array antenna in which 12 radiating elements locate on the facets of a truncated pyramid. Several field trials have been performed in order to optimise the tracking software and to evaluate the behaviour of the antenna in different environmental conditions. The results show that the developed antenna is feasible from the cost and performance point of view for this application.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
