Imke Polland's Afterword - building on socio-political debates in 2019 - offers thoughts on the role of the British royals in current times of uncertainty, particularly in the context of ongoing Brexit negotiations based on a review of recent British media coverage. Her article discusses newspaper's conjectures about Queen Elizabeth's alleged views on the referendum and it looks at the travels of royal heirs to European countries in the aftermath of the referendum as prime examples of the exertion of royal soft power influence. Its main argument is that by being illusive, the monarchy accumulates and upholds its symbolic relevance. As questions of national identity and the meanings of Britishness have been asked anew on occasion of the Brexit referendum debate, the role of the monarchy within conceptions of national identity are and will be renegotiated, too. This contribution addresses questions about the monarchy's possible roles, functions, and meanings in (post-)Brexit Britain.
