SummaryThe extraction of cobalt (II) from hydrochloric, nitric and perchloric acids, and also from buffer solutions with 1 -phenyl-3-methyl-4-trifluoroacetyl-pyrazolone-5 in chloroform has been studied. Cobalt (II) is extracted quantitatively at pH 5.4 and 8.5. Citrate and cyanide ions completely suppress the extraction of cobalt (II) whereas fluoride, iodide, phosphate, sulphate, thiosulphate and thiourea show partial masking. Cobalt (II) can be stripped into solutions of 0.1 Μ hydrochloric, nitric and perchloric acids or into 0.2 Μ potassium cyanide and buffers of pH 1 and 2.The decontamination studies show that a clean separation of cobalt(II) from a number of elements is possible. Some useful radioanalytical separations and their possible applications are discussed.
