The purpose of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of student learning by using group discussion method. This research was conducted in seventh grade student of SMPN 1 Sungai Kunyit, Pontianak Regency, in the academic year of 2013/2014 by using classroom action research. The research subjects were the grade seven students that consisted of 31 students chosen by using random sampling. The data were collected by using test and the action was applied by using classroom action research. The action was applied in 3 cycles on "history of Indonesia Independence". Every cycle consisted of four stages namely planning, action, observation and reflection. The finding of this research indicated that before conducting the action, there had not been any student who achieved the minimum mastery level. After conducting the first action, the students' learning was recorded for 58.50. In second implementation of the action, the score increased to 67.09.After the implementation of cycle 3, the score again increased to 76.93 that exceeded the minimum completion criteria that had been determined by school or civic education subject.This research concludes that the application of Group Discussion Method in civic education in SMPN 1 Sungai Kunyit improves the students' learning outcome.Keywords: Learning Method, Group Discussion, Learning Effectiveness, Civic Education.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas hasil belajar siswa dengan menggunakan sebuah diskusi kelompok. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada kelas VII di SMPN 1 Sungai Kunyit Kabupaten Pontianak tahun pelajaran 2013/2014 dengan menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Subjek penelitian sebanyak 31 siswa kelas VII yang dipilih secara random sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan tes, kemudian dilakukan tindakan menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Tindakan penelitian dilakukan sebanyak 3 siklus dengan materi sejarah perkembangan proklamasi kemerdekaan. Setiap siklus terdiri dari empat tahap yaitu perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar siswa sebelum dilakukan tindakan tidak ada satu siswa yang mencapai tingkat ketuntasan. Setelah dilaksanakan tindakan pada siklus 1, belum terjadi peningkatan hasil belajar menggunakan metode diskusi kelompok. Pada pelaksanaan siklus 2, terjadi peningkatan dan hasil pelaksanaan siklus 3 terjadi peningkatan yang sangat signifikan dan melampaui kriteria ketuntasan minimum (KKM) yang ditetapkan oleh sekolah atau mata pelajaran PKn.
