During the 18th century some Spanish thinkers of the Enlightenment expressed their critical views on popular religiosity. The government of King Charles III started proceedings against religious brotherhoods, which was part of a major scheme to reduce them. Though the scheme was not successful, it is a very important informative source in order to get to know the state of religious brotherhoods, throughout the kingdom during that period.
