In this paper we consider a class of exactly solvable closed string flux backgrounds that exhibit non-commutativity in the closed string coordinates. They are realized in terms of freely-acting asymmetric Z N -orbifolds, which are themselves close relatives of twisted torus fibrations with elliptic Z N -monodromy (elliptic T-folds). We explicitly construct the modular invariant partition function of the models and derive the non-commutative algebra in the string coordinates, which is exact to all orders in α ′ . Finally, we relate these asymmetric orbifold spaces to inherently stringy Scherk-Schwarz backgrounds and nongeometric fluxes.
Recently, we introduced a new procedure for computing a class of one-loop BPS-saturated amplitudes in String Theory, which expresses them as a sum of one-loop contributions of all perturbative BPS states in a manifestly T-duality invariant fashion. In this paper, we extend this procedure to all BPS-saturated amplitudes of the form F Γ d+k,d Φ, with Φ being a weak (almost) holomorphic modular form of weight −k/2. We use the fact that any such Φ can be expressed as a linear combination of certain absolutely convergent Poincaré series, against which the fundamental domain F can be unfolded. The resulting BPS-state sum neatly exhibits the singularities of the amplitude at points of gauge symmetry enhancement, in a chamber-independent fashion. We illustrate our method with concrete examples of interest in heterotic string compactifications.
The existence of non-singular string cosmologies is established in a class of two-dimensional supersymmetric Hybrid models at finite temperature. The left-moving sector of the Hybrid models gives rise to 16 real (N 4 = 4) spacetime supercharges as in the usual superstring models. The right-moving sector is non-supersymmetric at the massless level, but is characterized by MSDS symmetry, which ensures boson/fermion degeneracy of the right-moving massive levels. Finite temperature configurations, which are free of Hagedorn instabilities, are constructed in the presence of non-trivial "gravito-magnetic" fluxes. These fluxes inject non-trivial winding charge into the thermal vacuum and restore the thermal T -duality symmetry associated with the Euclidean time circle. Thanks to the unbroken right-moving MSDS symmetry, the one-loop string partition function is exactly calculable beyond any α -approximation. At the self-dual point new massless thermal states appear, sourcing localized spacelike branes, which can be used to connect a contracting thermal Universe to an expanding one. The resulting bouncing cosmology is free of any curvature singularities and the string coupling remains perturbative throughout the cosmological evolution.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
