This paper examines the close connection between the domain of biblical interpretation and the communal sphere, which is comprised of living data that serves as starting point for scriptural interpretation. The yield of such interpretations serves as an important contribution for a church seeking proactively to address and resolve various urgent concerns in the current context. This essay considers one such crisis needing to be addressed: the issue of human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara, with specific regard to how female victims of human trafficking have been torn apart by the variegated forms of oppression they have undergone. By looking to Genesis 1:26-27, with its emphasis on the concept of imago Dei, this paper demonstrates just how useful is a postcolonial approach to reading scripture, namely in the case of female victims who are reconsidering the manner in which they regard and understand themselves; no less than are men, women too are created in the image of God and, therefore, have in the sight of God an equality and parity of status with men. Equality and parity become a strong foundation upon which to resist every effort to debase the dignity and value of women. Furthermore, this article highlights the role of the community, namely as an agential collective set to oppose any attempt to rob fellow human beings of their claim, namely as living persons created according to God’s image.
This paper examines the meaning of the human mandate of dominion in Genesis 1:26-28. The exegetical reading of this text demonstrates that in contrast to interpretation that understands this mandate as a justification for exploiting the earth, Godâs command for humans to rule over the earth and subdue it refers to humansâ responsibility for caring for the environment wisely and compassionately to create order, peace, and harmony on earth. Such a reading encourages Christians to actively take part in the current attempts to find solutions to various ecological crises. It is only by being actively involved in the healing of the world that Christians can demonstrate the relevance of the Bible in this modern world.
The aim of this paper is to develop some useful theological foundations for the ministry of GMIT women in the family, church, and community. Using feminist theology studies, this paper reflects critically on the experiences of GMIT women who struggle to develop the capacity of existing resources to face the challenges of poverty and underdevelopment that shackles their lives today. The results of these reflections are then dialogued with a number of biblical narratives as the basis for theology. This paper underscores that as the image and likeness of God, GMIT women are called to act as protectors, nurturing, and leaders in their families and communities with full responsibility. In addition, GMIT women are also required to imitate Christ in terms of loving sincerely regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, culture, and social status and viewing other people as co-workers who work hand in hand in building the nation and state.
The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of Indonesian Christian women in the public sphere, especially in the realm of politics. This article aims to reconstruct the role of Israelite women who lived in pre-monarchic Israel using sociological, social science, anthropological, and archeological methods. The result of my analysis shows that the demands of war that occurred continuously in the territory of ancient Israel and the opening of new land in the mountainous regions of Israel required the active participation of women to not only be involved in the reproduction but also the production–an activity that belonged to male members of the family. This phenomenon creates a balance in the division of labor between men and women which of course increased the status of women in society. The result of this reconstruction that underlines the active role of women in the public sphere in the world of ancient Israel becomes an important model for Christian women in Indonesia today to take an active role in the public sphere, especially in politics.
