Along with the rapid development of technology, local wisdom tends to run into marginalization so that it is completely lost (Choesin, 2002 cited in Rasna&Tantra, 2017). The local wisdom should be able to become a milestone in the community in order to preserve the cultural heritage and the natural resources. Meanwhile, a transformation towards sustainability is urgently needed for our planet, and every other living thing on it including the resources it provides. Therefore, this study aims at exploring the local wisdoms that still exist and develops at several springs in Singosari Malang. Locations were chosen based on the profile of the springs which still have good management based on the local wisdom that are passed on through generations. The springs include Sumber Biruand Sumber Nagan in Gunungrejo village, Singosari District Malang. The research approach used is ethnographic research. Interviews, focused discussions, and documentation were the techniques used to collect the data. The result is descriptively presented in a form of a history of the springs which is retold in the form of short story.
Students of English Language Education Program in Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya ideally master Grammar before taking the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan. However, the fact shows that they are still weak in Grammar especially tenses. Therefore, the researchers initiate to develop a video as a media to teach tenses. Objectively, by using video, students get better understanding on tenses so that they can communicate using English accurately and contextually. To develop the video, the researchers used ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). First, the researchers analyzed the students’ learning need to determine the product that would be developed, in this case was a movie about English tenses. Then, the researchers developed a video as the product. The product then was validated by media expert who validated attractiveness, typography, audio, image, and usefulness and content expert and validated by a content expert who validated the language aspects and tenses of English used by the actors in the video dealing with the grammar content, pronunciation, and fluency performed by the actors. The result of validation shows that the video developed was considered good. Theoretically, it is appropriate to be used English Grammar classes. However, the media expert suggests that it still needs some improvement for the next development especially dealing with the synchronization between lips movement and sound on the scenes while the content expert suggests that the Grammar content of the video should focus on one tense only to provide more detailed concept of the tense.
Critical thinking is assumed as one of the essential skills in today’s era. One of the ways to foster students’ critical thinking is through discussion that provokes their curiosity. Unfortunately, in the online setting, some studies reported that students face challenges in online discussion. Therefore, teachers should find a way to optimize students’ engagement in online discussions. The Nominal Group Technique (NGT), which this paper argues for proposing a potential way in improving students’ participation and their critical thinking in an online discussion, is less used as a teaching strategy in educational practices. With the integration of Socratic Questioning, this research implemented a pre-experimental method with a one-shot design aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the NGT implementation in Critical Reading Classes conducted online combining both synchronous and asynchronous settings. Pre- and post-tests were implemented in two classes involving 52 students in six meetings. The descriptive statistics and t-test analysis had been implemented to find out the differences in students’ critical thinking skills before and after the NGT implementation. The result showed that there was a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills at p0.001, which confirmed that NGT with the integration of Socratic Questioning had a significant effect on the improvement of students’ critical thinking skills in an online context.

In the era where fictional works are popular with teenagers while there are still challenges in understanding English, the researchers conducted a study to develop stories with the title “Berteman itu Sulit”. One of the challenges is the lack of varied learning material in grammar learning. The researchers propose to develop an English material based on the students’ own life context, that is mental health, to make the post-pandemic learning process interesting. The short stories are used as English mindful material with 5 tenses included; simple present tense, present continuous tense, simple past tense, past continuous tense, and present perfect tense. In developing short stories, the researchers went through 4 steps; 1) story development; 2) validation; 3) publication; 4) trying out 10 EFL students from random schools. With a total of 13 parts, the stories are being published on Wattpad platform, the most popular fiction reading site in the post-pandemic era. There are three things to be underlined as the result; 1) the content for grammar material is adequate; 2) the learning material is validated as mindful and suitable for students to read; 3) the try-out questionnaire showed positive results of EFL learners’ perspective to the material.
