The research paper discusses the relationship between international trade, especially export, and the economic growth, presented by GDP, in Lithuania over the period of 2000-2015 years. The analysis is started by the historical review of possible types of relationships between exports and economic growth. Furthermore, the paper presents four theoretical propositions as export-led growth (1), growth-driven export (2), a feedback relationship (3) and simple contemporaneous relationship (4). This study examines the importance of the export-led growth hypothesis for Lithuania. The testing is based on Granger causality in the export-GDP system. The export-led growth hypothesis is found in Lithuania only in the short-run. The recommendations for future investigations are developed at the end of research paper's parts.
The relationships between export competitiveness and separate productivity factors are complex. Since the late 1990s debates on these relationships have been strongly infl uenced by the Krugman hypothesis, which states that the competitiveness could be measured directly by productivity. In the paper it is assumed, that export competitiveness is derivative of main factors' productivities, therefore properly presented and juxtaposed data on labour, capital and energy productivity/intensity would provide with new insights about character of relations between export competitiveness and main production factors productivities. Practical approach for predicting the Lithuanian export competitiveness future change direction by using listed indicators is being suggested. As a result, possible implications of main productivity factors impact on further export competitiveness have been foreseen.
Abstract. The paper focuses on implications of the EU accession for competitiveness of New Member States, and specifically, Lithuania. Basing on a case study analysis of internationally trading Lithuanian company, effects on its performance, caused by European trade regulation, are being revealed. Authors raise a question whether the EU accession facilitated international trade for newcomers, and if not, what reasons conditioned unfavourable effects. Subjective and objective factors impacting business activity in the after-transition years are being considered. Keywords: international trade, Lithuania's accession to the EU, competitiveness, banana trade case.
