Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) may provide a mechanism for executing sustainable development and it is also becoming a very significance revision before authorizing of any project plan. EIA helps to decision making process whether the project is beneficial or harmful effects for the environment. Both on site and off site environmental impacts can be reduced through undertaking EIA for any bridge construction activities. This paper mainly concentrates on to find out potential environmental impact during the construction, operation and maintenance phase of the project using different matrix method. It also finds out the effective mitigation measures of the adverse impacts that will be helpful for the surrounding environment. Primary data were collected from field survey, focus group discussion. Most of the impacts and other consequences are identified based on public perception and the interview of the key personnel's. Secondary data were also collected for conducting the research. The study found that the bridge is connecting three regions (Bauphal, Patuakhali and Barisal) and it will be a great achievement for the local coastal community. This new bridge project will not only increase the communication facilities but also other facilities such as economic flow, medical facilities etc. The EIA study founds some major negative Impacts such as loss of land and resettlement, loss of aquatic habitat, loss of local trees varieties, loss of agricultural lands, loss of vegetation, potential impact on ecological resources, impact on fish migration etc. But analyzing the overall impact of the environment, the EIA study found that that the possible negative impact is not so high and the project can be implemented. Different environmental management plans are suggested for reducing the potential negative impact of the bridge construction project.
The application of compost as alternatives to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers is considered a feasible agricultural practice to mitigate soil degradation caused by long term application of synthetic fertilizers. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the effect of cassava leaf compost on growth, yield and nutrient uptake of rice. Six treatments of two rice varieties (BRRI dhan29 and BINA dhan5) and three sources of nitrogen (Control - no nitrogen applied but residual soil N was 0.123%, urea @ 200 kg ha-1 and Cassava Leaf Compost @ 10 t ha-1) were used in this study. Cassava Leaf Compost @ 10 t ha-1 and urea @ 200 kg ha-1 significantly increased effective tillers per hill, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were 12.84 and 13.75, 25.00 g and 24.93 g, 5.57 t ha-1 and 6.047 t ha-1, respectively. Cassava Leaf Compost @ 10 t ha-1 and urea @ 200 kg ha-1 increased N uptake in root is 0.821% and 0.756%, and the residual effect of compost increased C, N, P, K and S availability in soil for the succeeding crop in Cassava Leaf Compost @ 10 t ha-1 applied plots. Carbon and N mineralization rates were higher than control and soils receiving recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers. Our findings suggested that compost could be used as biofertilizer to improve degraded cropland soils for sustainable agriculture.
This study deals with the assessment of nutritional status of rural and urban primary school going children in coastal belt of Bangladesh. Anthropometric data were collected from anthropological survey among 200 participants of twenty primary schools. Ten of these were from urban area and ten were from rural area and equal percentages of participants were taken from boys and girls who were selected randomly. The study found that rural school going children suffering more from under nutrition (Stunting, wasted, and underweight) problem where overweight and obesity is the major problem for urban children. It is also found that the health status of boys is slightly better than girls from rural area. Such as in rural area percentages of underweight girls are more than boy. But in case of urban area of Barisal the nutritional condition of girls is better than the boys. The study found remarkable deference of nutritional between rural and urban girls. Thinness and underweight is the major problem for rural girls but it is less in urban girls.
