-Purpose: To assess public awareness and attitudes toward epilepsy in Brazilians of different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Background: Several studies have examined public awareness and attitudes toward epilepsy in various countries but there are no equivalent data for Brazil or South America. Material and Methods: We have applied the survey proposed by Caveness and Gallup , with some modifications and adaptations to four groups (I-IV) of subjects: I-105 individuals accompanying patients to the Ophthalmologic outpatient clinic of the Hospital das Clínicas of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP); II-93 students recently admitted to medical and nursing school; III-101 senior non-medical students; and IV-69 senior medical students. Groups II, III, and IV were students at UNICAMP. Results: Individuals with a low socioeconomic standing had a poor profile of familiarity, knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy. The pre-university and university students had a relatively good profile when compared to the published international polls. Senior medical students had an excellent level of familiarity and knowledge, but showed no change in their objection to having a son or a daughter marry an epileptic person. Conclusions: Our data suggest that there is a clear-cut relationship between the level of education and the individual's familiarity and attitudes toward epilepsy. Effective elimination of the prejudice toward epilepsy requires specific training and not just general, superficial information about the condition. KEY-WORDS: epilepsy, attitude, prejudice, public awareness.
Purpose: To present the meta-analysis technique as a strategy applied to bibliometric research, in order to unveil the state of the art of the international scientific production, its interactions as areas of knowledge, the collaboration among authors and institutions in the Business Administration area, based in the period from 1998 and 2017. Originality/value: In the initially applied exploratory research, it was observed a gap in the debate of using meta-analysis as a state of the art investigation resource in the Business Administration area. The meta-analysis used as a research instrument makes possible a strict association of several studies. Design/methodology/approach: It is a qual-quant research approach, of exploratory character, outlined through bibliographic research. As for the investigation mechanism, it was used meta-analysis as a systematic investigation. The development of the research was divided into two phases. The first, called macro-analysis, and the second, micro-analysis. Findings: Research results showed that the number of bibliometric studies published in the second decade of the studied period was significantly higher. The publication areas, within the scope of Administration, were also affected by important changes, comparing the analyzed periods, evidencing a growth in publications between 2008 and 2018 in the areas of planning and management. As practical applications, it is possible, from this study, to use the publications and analyses to better understand how, when and by whom the bibliometrics was made, that is, denser and deeper bibliometric studies, which can highlight trends in a certain study area.
The COVID-19 pandemic has promoted a big change in the educational sector. Suddenly, teachers, professors, and students had to migrate from presential classes to the online system without prior notice or a training course. This paper aimed to verify how the need of a rapid change to the online system in response to the impossibility of keeping the presential system due to the mandatory social distancing imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic has affected relationships and performance of teachers, professors, and students, as well as review the technologies and procedures adopted by them to innovate and achieve sustainable education. To address the empirical side of this exploratory research, the authors of this paper sent an email questionnaire to kindergarten, elementary and high school teachers in the City of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), as well as to professors of the top 197 Brazilian universities. To address theoretical side of this exploratory research, an investigation was carried out through scientific databases. The data were analyzed with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), version 22.0, and with Microsoft Excel 2007. As a result, this paper showed that social isolation and transition to the online system greatly affected the work conditions of teachers and professors, as well as the learning process of students. Anyway, sustainable actions were taken to overcome these challenges. Furthermore, this paper proposed a framework that might support the development of new studies, filling the literature gap on the subject.
