Marriage is a very important step in women's life. A woman must be sure that the groom she has chosen is the right man for her entirely life, and she must be ready for the consequence of her choice for the rest of her life. Having a handsome, well-known and prosperous husband, is a part of women's esteem. When all those things gone, it is a condition in which a wife must show her integrity and faith to her husband. In some parts of the world, there is a belief related to the culture that when a woman gets married, she has to set her life as a house wife with high integrity since it is her dignity. She will lose her pride when she decides to be a widow by divorce. The Great Gatsby and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck are the literary works that propose the idea of women's choice in marriage. They agreed to choose the different men to be their husbands because of the success they see at the time. Both works explore women's problem when their husbands are not as success as their previous boyfriends. The word 'choice' then becomes very important since she cannot take what she has given back because her condition before and after marriage is different.

Social discrimination is a never-ending issue that happens not only in reality but also in fiction novels. It is described as perpetual inequality of people based on their disability, illness, sexual orientation, religion, or any other. Hence, literature as a cultural product has a potential to deliver social discrimination discourse. This research aims to discuss how the social discrimination depicted in Kiera Cass’ The Selection. The Selection is a story about an event to find a prince’s bride in Illéa. The caste system and absolute monarchy exist in Illéa’s kingdom. Depending on their jobs, people are divided into eight castes. In this research, the representation theory by Stuart Hall is applied. The study’s analysis is qualitative with the novel as primary data and other supporting sources as secondary data. The collected data are used to indicate how social discrimination between castes constructed in the novel, how it is related to the condition in the United States of America in 1900s, and where the author took a side with. The result of the research shows that social discrimination occurs as the absolute position of the caste and it is difficult to change this situation. The novel’s social discrimination is also related to the real condition of the United States of America in the early 1900s, which includes job, partner, and lifestyle aspects. The author appeared to position herself more on the side of the lower caste at first, but no solution is offered as a result of the lower caste’s work.

The presence of women has been questioned by men since ancient time up to now. They tried to define what kind of creature women are. Aristoteles had given the idea of woman that she is male in form but female in virtue. Thomas Aquinas also defined that woman is an imperfect man. In spite of their confusion about women, they like women’s presence since they give beauty in life. The beauty of women is not only in men’s mind but it also appears through their performance. They look so beautiful so that men want to make them as their partners in life. The meaning of beauty on women has been changed from time to time. In postmodern era, the meaning of beautiful women is not the same with that in the previous era. The elegant performance does not become the measurement anymore. The idea of what ‘she becomes’ is the indication of  beauty itself and it is discussed in the last part of the article.

<p class="Abstrak">The progress history of Black Africans in America remains a slice of the history of minority struggle in the world of inferiority. Racism becomes a brand topic in every sector of Blacks live in America. War and act of reformation as ways against racism are almost routinely done by Black Americans to reach their civil rights as Americans. Although the war against racism has ended, but racism atmosphere can still be felt, and it seems to have been felt by Ernest J. Gaines in his novel entitled <em>A Lesson Before Dying. </em>Therefore, this writing would like to analyze and describe hegemonic discrimination by White Americans. Hegemonic discrimination is a new phenomenon for Black Americans in the Southern. This theoretical foundation refers to the theory of Hegemony by Antonio Gramsci that is applied to see how discriminative hegemony is implemented smoothly and comfortably.</p>
