Activated natural zeolite clinoptilolite is microporous hydrated aluminosilicates crystals with well-defined structures containing AlO 4 and SiO 4 tetrahedral linked through the common oxygen atoms. It is to point out that zeolites act as strong adsorbents and ion-exchangers but having many other useful properties. Due to its cationexchange ability, zeolites have catalytic properties and, for that, multiple uses in medicine and industry, agriculture, water purification and detergents. Zeolites are nontoxic substance, excellent for UVR and microbes protection, for proteins and small molecules such as glucose adsorption. In this paper its positive effect on the metabolism of living organisms and its anticancerogenic, antiviral, antimetastatic and antioxidant effect. The activity of natural zeolite as natural immunostimulator was presented as well as its help in healing wounds. Therefore, the present paper is an attempt to modify cotton (by mercerization) and polyester (by alkaline hydrolysis) fabrics for summer clothing with addition of natural zeolite nanoparticles for achieving UV and antibacterial protective textiles.
The purpose of the research was to measure the increase in the binding of inclusion complexes β-cyclodextrin-peppermint oil (β-CD_PM) to cellulose in cotton and cotton/polyester material with BTCA as the crosslinking agent by applying an ultrasonic bath at room temperature and a frequency of 80 kHz for 10 min. After sonication, the samples were left in a bath for 24 h after which they were dried, thermocondensed and subjected to a number of wash cycles. The treated samples were analysed with Attenuated total reflection (ATR) units heated up to 300 °C (Golden Gate (FTIR-ATR)) to monitor chemical changes indicative of crosslinking, while physico-chemical changes in the samples were monitored by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Mechanical properties were measured according to EN ISO 13934-1:1999, and coloristic changes were evaluated by the whiteness degree according to CIE (WCIE) and the yellowing index (YI), while antimicrobial activity was determined according to AATCC TM 147-2016. The results show a physico-chemical modification of the UZV-treated cellulosic material. Moreover, partial antimicrobial efficacy on Gram-negative bacteria was confirmed for treated fabrics.
Due to a large concentration of animals living in a relatively small area, air on pig farms can be contaminated by microorganisms which can have an adverse effect on animal and human health. To determine the microbiological air quality on a pig farm in Slavonia, as well as the differences in the microbiological air quality at different distances from the farm, air was sampled at five locations at the farm (nursery room, finishing rooms 1 and 2, service room, gestation room) and four locations at a distance of 1.5, 5, 10 and 15 m from the farm in July 2019. At each location, temperature and relative humidity were measured and air for microbiological analysis was collected in quadruplicates (n=36) by impaction method. The total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB), as well as yeast and mould counts were determined on blood agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar, respectively, and expressed as CFU/m 3 . The AMB counts in all five farm locations, as well as the yeast and mould counts in nursery and finishing room 1 exceeded the reference values of 1.05x10 3 CFU/m 3 for AMB and 4.1x10 2 CFU/m 3 for yeasts and moulds. Several years after the food industry scandal when horsemeat was found in products sold in Europe as beef products in 2013, Croatia began testing food for the presence of foreign protein. For the time being, these tests are not part of routine monitoring, but the result of examining the situation on the market in the city of Zagreb. Namely, in recent years, central Croatia has been trying to establish itself as a tourist destination, and Zagreb hosted hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world before the COVID-19 pandemic. The eating habits of the various groups that came to Zagreb were different, and the larger hotel chains recognized the seriousness of the services and sought help to ensure that the food offered was consistent with their declarations and would not conflict with religious requirements. One of these requirements was the testing for foreign proteins such as horse and pork in foods where they were not declared. Although horse and pork are safe for human consumption, they are not part of the eating habits in all countries. The Dr. Andrija Štampar Teaching Institute for Public Health introduced methods for detection of horse and pig DNA in food samples.
The Croatian National Health Care Act defines the areas of activities of the public health institute, including the activities of the epidemiology of infectious diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases, public health, health promotion, environmental health, microbiology, school and adolescent medicine, mental health and addiction prevention at Zagreb City level. This paper reviews the highly variable activities in the Andrija Štampar Teaching Institute of Public Health with the aim of promoting a comprehensive approach to the COVID-19 pandemic. Human and analytical resources in the Institute, activities and rapid implementation of innovations testify to the high capacities for adaptation to emerging risks. In the Institute, it is possible to carry out a whole range of tests and to monitor the environmental factors with predominant impact on human health and safety of the Zagreb environment. The supply of safe water for human consumption in the Republic of Croatia during the current COVID-19 crisis has been uninterrupted and in accordance with applicable legislation. Also, our laboratories have been developing and introducing a method for wastewater testing for SARS-CoV-2 presence. The sludge from wastewater treatment plants is used in agriculture, and potential risks associated with the COVID-19 outbreak should be assessed prior to each application on the soil. Increased use of disinfectants during the epidemic may present a higher risk to the aquatic environment. Air quality monitoring indicates a positive impact on air quality as result of isolation measures.
