Health literacy, a more complex concept than knowledge, is a required capacity to obtain, understand, integrate and act on health information [1], in order to enhance individual and community health, which is defined by different levels, according to the autonomy and personal capacitation in decision making [2]. Medium levels of Health literacy in an adolescent population were found in a study conducted in 2013/2014, being higher in sexual and reproductive health and lower in substance use. It was also noticed that the higher levels of health literacy were in the area adolescents refer to have receipt more health information. The health literacy competence with higher scores was communication skills, and the lower scores were in the capacity to analyze factors that influence health. Higher levels were also found in younger teenagers, but in a higher school level, confirming the importance of health education in these age and development stage. Adolescents seek more information in health professionals and parents, being friends more valued as a source information in older adolescents, which enhance the importance of peer education mainly in older adolescents [3]. As a set of competences based on knowledge, health literacy should be developed through education interventions, encompassing the cultural and social context of individuals, since the society, culture and education system where the individual is inserted can define the way the development and enforcement of the health literacy competences [4]. The valued sources of information should be taken into account, as well as needs of information in some topics referred by adolescents in an efficient health education. Schizophrenia is a serious and chronic mental illness which has a profound effect on the health and well-being related with the well-known nature of psychotic symptoms. The exercise has the potential to improve the life of people with schizophrenia improving physical health and alleviating psychiatric symptoms. However, most people with schizophrenia remains sedentary and lack of access to exercise programs are barriers to achieve health benefits. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of exercise on I) the type of intervention in mental health, II) in salivary levels of alpha-amylase and cortisol and serum levels of S100B and BDNF, and on III) the quality of life and selfperception of the physical domain of people with schizophrenia. The sample consisted of 31 females in long-term institutions in the Casa de Saúde Rainha Santa Isabel, with age between 25 and 63, and with diagnosis of schizophrenia according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR). Physical fitness was assessed by the six-minute walk distance test (6MWD). Biological variables were determined by ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay). Xanthomonas campestris pathovars are widely distributed throughout the globe and have a broad host range, causing severe economic losses in the food and ornamental crucifers markets. Using an approach based on multilocus sequence typing, phylogenetic diversity and population structure of a set of 75 Portuguese and other Xanthomonas campestris isolates from several cruciferous hosts were assessed. Although this population displayed a major clonal structure, neighbour‐net phylogenetic analysis highlighted the presence of recombinational events that may have driven the ecological specialization of X. campestris with different host ranges within the Brassicaceae family. A high level of genetic diversity within and among X. campestris pathovars was also revealed, through the establishment of 46 sequence types (STs). This approach provided a snapshot of the global X. campestris population structure in cruciferous host plants, correlating the existing pathovars with three distinct genetic lineages. Phylogenetic relationships between the founder genotype and remaining isolates that constitute the X. campestris pv. campestris population were further clarified using goeBURST algorithm. Identification of an intermediate link between X. campestris pv. campestris and X. campestris pv. raphani provided new insights into the mechanisms driving the differentiation of both pathovars. Wide geographic distribution of allelic variants suggests that evolution of X. campestris as a seedborne pathogen was not shaped by natural barriers. However, as Portuguese isolates encompass 26 unique STs and this country is an important centre of domestication of Brassica oleracea crops, a strong case is made for its role as a diversification reservoir, most probably through host–pathogen coevolution.
Recent WHO guidelines on control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) call for the widespread use of antiretroviral (AR) therapy (ART) for people living with HIV. Given the considerable overlap between infections by HIV and Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, it is important to understand the impact of AR compounds and ART regimens on infections by malaria parasites. We undertook a systematic approach to identify AR drugs and ART drug combinations with inhibitory activity against the obligatory hepatic stage of Plasmodium infection. Our in vitro screen of a wide array of AR drugs identified the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors efavirenz and etravirine (ETV), and the protease inhibitor nelfinavir, as compounds that significantly impair the development of the rodent malaria parasite P. berghei in an hepatoma cell line. Furthermore, we show that WHO-recommended ART drug combinations currently employed in the field strongly inhibit Plasmodium liver infection in mice, an effect that may be significantly enhanced by the inclusion of ETV in the treatment. Our observations are the first report of ETV as an anti-Plasmodial drug, paving the way for further evaluation and potential use of ETV-containing ARTs in regions of geographical overlap between HIV and Plasmodium infections.
Objective: To evaluate whether the current case-by-case practice leads to sufficient reporting of immunogenicity-related information in the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPCs) of biological products approved in the European market.Methods: Immunogenicity-related information was identified and extracted from a group of 73 biological drugs that complied with drug-selection criteria. Afterwards, thirteen dichotomous questions were proposed to evaluate whether any issues are being commonly neglected.Results: Most SmPCs (92%) do not have any recommendations on how to report immunogenicity-related adverse drug reactions by patients or healthcare professionals. Furthermore, 80% of SmPCs do not identify the assay used to assess the reported immunogenicity rates, while 81% do not address the possible impact of immunogenicity on their drug's pharmacokinetics. It was also identified that a group factor (i.e. older drugs' SmPCs) could be influencing how/which issues were being addressed by newerdrugs SmPCs. To transform SmPCs into useful tools when an immunogenic response occurs, a proposal on how to report immunogenicity-related information in the SmPCs of biological products is advanced. This tool can be used by patients, healthcare professionals, regulators and businesses to evaluate the information of SmPCs. Conclusions:Based on these results, a case-by-case strategy does not yield enough reporting across products and thus immunogenicity-related information should be reported in a systematic way. Further guidance about reporting immunogenicity-related information is required, else SmPCs will not be the basis of information for healthcare professionals on how to use a biological product safely and effectively.
