The occurrence of natural gas in the Santa Maria and Ventura basins comprises only a small part of the hydrocarbons found to date. The preponderance of gas occurs in direct association with the oil, either as solution gas or, rarely, as gas caps. There are 16 known natural gas accumulations with the largest concentration located along the Santa Barbara coast line. There the age of the producing formations is largely restricted to Oligocene and lower Miocene sandstone.
