The predictions of gyrokinetic and gyrofluid simulations of ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) instability and turbulence in tokamak plasmas as well as some tokamak plasma thermal transport models, which have been widely used for predicting the performance of the proposed ITER tokamak, are compared. These comparisons provide information on effects of differences in the physics content of the various models and on the fusion-relevant figures of merit of plasma performance predicted by the models. Many of the comparisons are undertaken for a simplified plasma model and geometry which is an idealization of the plasma conditions and geometry in a DIII-D H-mode experiment. Most of the models show good agreements in their predictions and assumptions for the linear growth rates and frequencies. There are some differences associated with different equilibria. However, there are significant differences in the transport levels between the models. The causes of some of the differences are examined in some detail, with particular attention to numerical convergence in the turbulence simulations (with respect to simulation mesh size, system size and, for particle-based simulations, the particle number). The implications for predictions of fusion plasma performance are also discussed.
A new theory-based transport model with comprehensive physics (trapping, general toroidal geometry, fully electromagnetic, electron-ion collisions, impurity ions) has been developed. The core of the model is the new trapped-gyro-Landau-fluid (TGLF) equations, which provide a fast and accurate approximation to the linear eigenmodes for gyrokinetic drift-wave instabilities (trapped ion and electron modes, ion and electron temperature gradient modes, and kinetic ballooning modes). The new TGLF transport model is more accurate, and has an extended range of validity, compared to its predecessor GLF23. The TGLF model unifies trapped and passing particles in a single set of gyro-Landau-fluid equations. A model for the averaging of the Landau resonance by the trapped particles makes the equations work seamlessly over the whole drift-wave wave-number range from trapped ion modes to electron temperature gradient modes. A fast eigenmode solution method enables unrestricted magnetic geometry. The transport model uses the TGLF eigenmodes to compute quasilinear fluxes of energy and particles. A model for the saturated intensity of the turbulence completes the flux calculation. The intensity model is constructed to fit a large set of nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence simulations with kinetic electrons. The TGLF model is valid in new physical regimes that GLF23 was not. These include the low aspect ratio spherical torus, which has both a high trapped fraction and strong shaping of magnetic flux surfaces. The TGLF model is also valid close to the magnetic separatrix so the transport physics of the H-mode pedestal region can be explored.
The first transport code simulations using the newly developed trapped gyro-Landau-fluid (TGLF) theory-based transport model are presented. TGLF has comprehensive physics to approximate the turbulent transport due to drift-ballooning modes in tokamaks. The TGLF model is a next generation gyro-Landau-fluid model that improves the accuracy of the trapped particle response and the finite Larmor radius effects compared to its predecessor, GLF23. The model solves for the linear eigenmodes of trapped ion and electron modes, ion and electron temperature gradient modes, and electromagnetic kinetic ballooning modes in either shifted circle or shaped geometry. A database of over 400 nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations using the GYRO code has been created. A subset of 83 simulations with shaped geometry has been used to find a model for the saturation levels. Using a simple quasilinear (QL) saturation rule, remarkable agreement with the energy and particle fluxes from a wide variety of GYRO simulations is found for both shaped or circular geometry and also for low aspect ratio. Using this new QL saturation rule along with a new E×B shear quench rule for shaped geometry, the density and temperature profiles have been predicted in over 500 transport code runs and the results compared against experimental data from 96 tokamak discharges. Compared to GLF23, the TGLF model demonstrates better agreement between the predicted and experimental temperature profiles. Surprisingly, TGLF predicts that the high-k modes are found to play an important role in the central core region of low and high confinement plasmas lacking transport barriers.
A fixed combination of theory-based transport models, called the Multi-Mode Model, is used in the BALDUR [C. E. Singer et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 49, 275 (1988)] transport simulation code to predict the temperature and density profiles in tokamaks. The choice of the Multi-Mode Model has been guided by the philosophy of using the best transport theories available for the various modes of turbulence that dominate in different parts of the plasma. The Multi-Mode model has been found to provide a better match to temperature and density profiles than any of the other theory-based models currently available. A description and partial derivation of the Multi-Mode Model is presented, together with three new examples of simulations of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [K. M. McGuire et al., Phys. Plasmas 2, 2176 (1995)]. The first simulation shows the strong effect of recycling on the ion temperature profile in TFTR supershot simulations. The second simulation explores the effect of a plasma current ramp—where the plasma energy content changes slowly on the energy confinement time scale. The third simulation shows that the Multi-Mode Model reproduces the experimentally measured profiles when tritium is used as the hydrogenic isotope in L-mode (low confinement mode) plasmas.
We report the results of the first experiments on the DIII-D tokamak to examine the dependence of the transport and stability characteristics of ITER hybrid scenario plasmas on the toroidal flow (or rotation) of the plasma. With the new DIII-D capability to independently vary the neutral beam torque and power, the central rotation has been reduced by as much as a factor of 4.6 compared with discharges with unidirectional beams. Although energy confinement decreases and the m/n = 3/2 NTM amplitude increases for low rotation speed, the fusion performance figure of merit, , still exceeds the value required on ITER for Qfus = 10. These observations provide optimism about the projections of the hybrid scenario to low rotation plasmas in ITER, but they also indicate the need for a better understanding of the physics of toroidal rotation in order to project present-day results to future experiments.
