The MCSA 11 is a Multi-channel Specuum Analyzer built during CY 1988 to support the detection of artificial, extraterrestrial microwave radio signals. The architecture of the MCSA II is based on a computationally optimized cascade of oversampled uniform digital filter banks. The MCSA I1 transforms a IO MHz band of radio frequencies into 2 x 19,160,064, temporally overlapped and Hanning windowed channels with 0.70 Hz resolution and 1 Hz noise bandwidth, as well as 2 x 9,580,032, temporally overlapped and Hanning windowed channels of 1.39Hz resolution and 2 Hz noise bandwidth. The MCSA II uses custom VLSI signal processors (developed at Stanford University as a student project), to achieve the required performance in a compact, 14 board system.
