This supplement to Pharmacy World and Science records the scientific and clinical work presented at the 5th Symposium of the ESSPPMM held in Termoli, Italy, from October 4th -8th 1995. This series of European meetings at two yearly intervals, was held for the first time in 1987 in Switzerland, then in Germany, in U.K. (International and European joint Symposium) and in the Netherlands. The steady evolution of science in this series of meetings is satisfying: interest in purine and pyrimidine metabolism under normal and pathological conditions has been growing exponentially and there has been increasing scientific development of molecular genetics and biochemical pharmacology. The latter is a rapidly developing area now embracing not only tumors, but also immunological, viral, parasitic, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. This evolution has been the result of a cooperation among different countries and between laboratory scientists and those who work as clinical specialists in rheumatology, immunology, oncology, nephrotogy and paediatries. The success &the present meeting can be judged, in part, from the fact that 90 abstracts from 17 countries have been presented. About 25 per cent of these result from the cooperation among researchers from different European countries. Six groups from five countries obtained an EC '
