The Rare or Threatened Australian Plants (ROTAP) list and associated coding system was developed and has been maintained by CSIRO since 1979, and lists taxa that are Presumed Extinct, Endangered, Vulnerable, Rare or Poorly Known at the national level. This edition provides the most up-to-date list for conservation purposes. A significant number of endangered and Vulnerable taxa are included, which have not yet been considered for inclusion on either the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council list or the Commonwealth's Schedule 1. This is the first ROTAP publication to include subspecies and varieties, and the list now includes 5031 taxa. There have also been at least 3270 amendments to data for listed taxa. A total of 2012 additional records of regional data for tax already listed has been included. A key factor in the development of public opinion, and the design of effective management schemes, lies in the production of accurate data to tell the story. What is threatened? Where is it found? These are two of the most fundamental questions to answer before any strategic plans can be drawn up. Obtaining such apparently simple statistics is a huge task. Rare or Threatened Australian Plants is therefore an important reference for the national status of threatened species, particularly for Rare and Poorly Known species.
Plants of Western New South Wales grew from the long experience and expertise which the authors acquired during their employment with their respective organisations in the arid and semi-arid pastoral areas of the State. Each author became aware of the need for a comprehensive record illustrating and describing the great array of plants in the area. The need was identified both for people involved in research and advisory services, and particularly for the landholders who need to manage the plants for their livelihood. The book is a landmark because it draws together all of the existing knowledge of plants from the area, adds to it the extensive collections and research of the authors and presents the whole as a comprehensive collation and description of the plants of the dry pastoral portion of the State. Because of its comprehensive nature, the work is significant to pastoralists and people concerned with plants throughout Australia. The 1992 edition of Plants of Western New South Wales has been reprinted and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING with a one page appendix giving website addresses of various herbaria in Australia where the reader can readily access up-to-date information on botanical name changes.
The effects upon shrubby and herbaceous vegetation of two low-intensity fires and/or grazing by feral rabbits and wombats were studied in a subalpine environment between 1977 and 1984. Fire reduced shrub cover and biomass to low levels and their recovery was slow. When unburnt, tall shrubs increased, then decreased as a result of extreme frost and drought and subsequently continued to decrease. The recovery of the herb cover and biomass after fire was complete within a year except when delayed by drought andlor disturbance by rabbits. Bare ground was less than 2% in the absence of fire and rabbit grazing but increased to nearly 20% after fire in the presence of rabbits. Rabbits reduced the cover and biomass of 39 species of forb, in some cases to zero. Feral rabbit populations survived and multiplied on burnt areas but decreased on areas left unburnt. The implications of this research for the management of similar environments are discussed.
The effects of rabbits and kangaroos, and rabbits alone, on the biomass and species composition of a native grassland dominated by Stipa nitida/nodosa, Danthonia caespitosa and Aristida contorta, and a grassland dominated by the exotic species Hordeum glaucum, Vulpia spp., Medicago laciniata and the native Erodium crinitum growing at Yathong Nature Reserve in central New South Wales was monitored between 1979 and 1985. Rabbits generally favoured the grassy component; kangaroos also favoured grasses but less so. Changes in non-grass species composition due to grazing was generally insignificant. Changes in species composition due to seasonal differences in rainfall was highly significant. No new species appeared on plots exclosed from grazing for 10 years, suggesting that the grazing by livestock, rabbits, and kangaroos in the past has determined the present species composition. The annual biomass consumption by rabbits averaged over 6 years was 100-200 kg ha-1, which is equivalent to reducing the carrying capacity by one sheep for every 2-4 ha rabbit-infested area. In the native grassland the spatial pattern of rabbit grazing, as indicated by faecal pellet distribution, biomass removal, and percentage of 'unpalatable' species in the pasture, shows greatest grazing pressure to be within 50 m of the warren, grazing intensity dropping off from there to 300 m the greatest distance studied. From the start of the study 'palatable' species, especially grasses, were at their lowest density within 50 m of the warren; this appeared to be a historical effect of grazing. No patterns were discernible in the pasture dominated by introduced species. Little change in species composition of these grasslands can be expected under a wide range of grazing pressure, except close to rabbit warrens.
Field responses to various burning and grazing treatments in three sites on the Southern Tablelands were measured. Grazing by native mammals was unrestricted and continuous. Burning occurred once from fires of low intensity. Records of mortality, height growth and in some cases, seed production showed biologically significant effects of the treatments imposed on small plots. Dillwynia retorta plants were susceptible to a single fire but the species persisted through seedling germination. Other species showed vegetative survival to various extents from the fire. The burning-grazing combination was particularly potent in affecting survival, regeneration and growth of all species. Supplementary evidence of species' responses were gathered from the treatment of selected individuals in the field and laboratory.Some of the implications of these results and in particular the practice of controlled burning are discussed in relation to the management of reserves set aside for flora and fauna conservation.
