Measuremetits of plasma and urinary steroid levels have been made in twenty-five patients with varying degrees of male pattern alopecia. No correlation was found between this condition and circulating serum androgen levels. Urinary steroid measurements, however, established a positive correlation between the degree of male pattern alopecia and levels of dehydroepiandrosterone or tetrahydrocortisone, and also indicated a large number of patients had mild hyperadrenal activity. The implications of these findings are discussed.
Contaminated water in swimming pools or tropical fish aquaria is the usiml source of Mycobacterium marinum skin infection. Many patients give a history of preceding minor skin trauma. Successful culture of the organism from biopsy confirms the diagnosis. Spontaneous resolution frequently occurs, hut, where treatment is considered necessary, a trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole regime has proved extremely effective.
