T h e Cooperative Fuel Research,2 which has been in progress for several years, h a d as i t s original a i m the d e t e r m i n a t i o n of the effect.of certain changes in fuel volatility u p o n the performance of t h e average motor car. The research soon showed that fuels of unusually low volatility often increased crank-case oil dilution to an extent which precluded t h e i r use. As a result a t t e n t i o n was directed for a t i m e t o a s t u d y of dilution. It is w i t h inf o r m a t i o n derived directly or indirectly f r o m t h i s s t u d y that the present report deals.
