The automation of longitudinal and lateral control has enabled drivers to become "hands and feet free" but they are required to remain in an active monitoring state with a requirement to resume manual control if required. This represents the single largest allocation of system function problem with vehicle automation as the literature suggests that humans are notoriously inefficient at completing prolonged monitoring tasks. To further explore whether partially automated driving solutions can appropriately support the driver in completing their new monitoring role, video observations were collected as part of an on-road study using a Tesla Model S being operated in Autopilot mode. A thematic analysis of video data suggests that drivers are not being properly supported in adhering to their new monitoring responsibilities and instead demonstrate behaviour indicative of complacency and over-trust. These attributes may encourage drivers to take more risks whilst out on the road.
Part 1 presents a theoretical solution to the problem of lubrication of soft, highly deformed surfaces. It is argued that with this type of contact the inlet and outlet regions can be separated and analysed independently. This approach leads to a single value of non-dimensional film thickness at the point of maximum contact pressure and to a non-dimensional minimum film thickness dependent on the relationship between the inlet and outlet parameters. In Part 2, these results are applied to the problems of a cylinder sliding on an elastomer lined surface, an elastomer lined journal bearing and a sliding O-ring seal.
This paper presents a solution to the problem of hydrodynamic lubrication of journal bearings taking into account the elastic distortions of the shaft and the bearing. The exact solution for determining the elastic deformation for a given pressure distribution around a bearing is given, together with the reiterative procedure adopted to find the pressure distribution which satisfies both the hydrodynamic and elastic requirements of the system. Results are given which have been derived for a material with a Poisson’s ratio of 0.28, but other values such as 0.33 do not incur substantial errors. The results can be applied to a wide range of operating conditions using the nondimensional group of terms suggested in the paper. The bearing is assumed to be infinite in length, and infinite in thickness. The latter assumption is shown to be valid for a particular case where the outside diameter of the bearing shell is 3.5 times the shaft diameter. A further assumption in the calculation is a condition of constant viscosity of the lubricant existing around the bearing.
