Mr. EDWARD Box, who had taken considerable interest in the subject, had been much astonished to find, on searching through the Patent Office Library some years ago, what a vast number of suggestions had been put forward for reclaiming ships from the water for painting and repairs. Probably the most successful kind of floating dock, from a commercial point of view, had been the one-sided off-shore dock. It was easy to control and rapidly worked; and as vessels could be warped into position end on, or from the front, quays could be built out at either end, for vessels Downloaded by [ UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA] on [12/09/16].

considered that engineers should be grateful Mr. Baterden. to Mr. Savile for the candid way in which he had described the accident at the entrance of the dock; one failure often taught more than many successes. The difficulty found in ascertaining the dividing line between the sand and clay a t the lock showed the necessity for a greater number of accurate borings over the site of such works. He was acquainted with a case where, over a long line of borings in a riverbed , the depth to the rock did not exceed about 10 feet below low water, whereas about 250 feet eastward of this line, where dock-work was then in progress, the boring-tools went down through mud to a depth of 153 feet below low water before they touched rock.
