Mating system and effective pollen dispersal were studied in a natural stand of knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata Lemmon.) using 11 isozyme loci. Analyses were performed by fitting neighbourhood and mixed-mating models to multilocus genotypic arrays of offspring from four mother trees. Neighbourhoods consisted of all potential outcross males within 11 m of each mother tree (44, on average). Average outcrossing rates of the mother trees were estimated to be 0.97 and 0.96 for the respective models, whereas the population-wide outcrossing rate based on the mixed-mating model and a broader sample of mother trees was 0.92. The estimated proportion of offspring sired by males outside the neighbourhood of each mother tree was 0.56. Thus about 41 per cent of matings resulted from outcrossing with nearby males (within neighbourhoods). Distance and direction of individual males from mother trees and the size (tree height) of males played significant roles in determining outcross mating patterns within neighbourhoods. Male mating success increased with both proximity and tree size, although males east of mother trees accounted for more offspring than males in other directions.Despite the role of proximity, directionality and tree size in determining mating success within neighbourhoods, the effective number of males mating with each female seems to be large.Keywords: gene flow, mating success, mating Pinus attenuata. IntroductionMating systems and patterns of pollen dispersal play a central role in plant population genetics (Levin & Kerster, 1974;Hamrick, 1989). They influence effective population size and the degree of population subdivision resulting either from drift or differential selection. In addition, they affect levels of inbreeding and genetic structure within populations. Knowledge of mating systems and gene flow is also important for managing breeding populations (Levin & Kerster, 1974;Adams & Birkes, 1991) and for designing efficient genetic conservation strategies (Ledig, 1986;Hamrick et al., 1991 (Clegg, 1980;Brown, 1990; Mitton, 1992). Mating pattern analysis, however, has usually been restricted to estimation of parameters in the mixedmating model, which subdivides all mating events into two classes: self-fertilization and random outcrossing (Fyfe & Bailey, 1951). The mixed-mating model makes several assumptions, including that the probability of an outcross is independent of maternal genotype, and outcross pollen-pool allele frequencies are homogeneous across maternal parents (Brown et a!., 1985;Neale & Adams, 1985).Evidence in forest trees, however, indicates that these and other assumptions of the mixed-mating model are often violated (Mitton, 1992). Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento da madeira de Grevillea robusta na produção de painéis de madeira aglomerada. Os painéis foram produzidos em densidades de 0,60 e 0,80 g/cm³ e conteúdo de resina de 6 e 8%. Os resultados de propriedades físicas e mecânicas dos painéis fabricados com densidade de 0,80 g/cm³ e conteúdo de resina de 8% evidenciaram que a madeira de Grevillea robusta pode ser utilizada como fonte alternativa de matéria-prima para produção de painéis aglomerados.

Árvore, Viçosa-MG, v.28, n.4, p.487-491, 2004RESUMO -Foi instalado um teste combinado de procedências e progênies de liquidambar (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) em Quedas do Iguaçu, no sudoeste do Paraná, para verificar a produtividade de madeira e a variabilidade genética entre e dentro de procedências. O delineamento usado foi em blocos de famílias compactos, no espaçamento de 3 m x 3 m, com as progênies dispostas em parcelas lineares de cinco plantas. Aos 11 anos de idade, a produtividade média das procedências de maior crescimento foi maior que 40 m 3 /ha.ano. As procedências de maior crescimento foram da América Central (Guatemala, Honduras e Nicarágua), originárias de latitudes inferiores a 15 o N. Nas procedências Gomez Farias, Las Lajas, Los Alpes e Monte Bello foram detectadas variações significativas entre suas progênies. Porém, somente as seleções entre as progênies oriundas de Los Alpes e Las Lajas proporcionariam oportunidades de melhoramento genético, tendo em vista as suas altas médias de produtividade. Não foram detectadas variações significativas em volume entre as progênies das procedências Tactic e Yucul. Porém, será oportuno incluí-las na população para melhoramento, dadas a elevada produtividade volumétrica e a oportunidade de se ampliar a base genética para seleções posteriores com base em outros caracteres, como a qualidade do fuste e da madeira.Palavras-chave: Liquidambar styraciflua, progênie, seleção. The study focused on the variation of growth performances of grevillea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.), an important multi-purpose tree, also known as silky oak, of Australian origin and used in many countries, including Brazil. The trial was conducted by the Brazilian Agriculture Research Corporation (Embrapa) and Itaipu-Binacional, and assessed in collaboration with the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). A half-sib family trial was established with seed from different geographical locations throughout the species natural range. The study sought to identify fast growing families and individuals for timber and shade production. Significant differences among families were found, and recommendations were made for a selective thinning to transform the progeny test into a mixed provenance seedling seed orchard.
