IntroductionMegaureter, described as ureter dilatation more than 7 mm in diameter, commonly associated with other anomalies, is still a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Magnetic resonance urography (MRU) appears as a promising method in urinary tract imaging, providing both anatomical and functional information. There are several postprocessing tools to assess renal function (including differential renal function) and severity of ureteral obstruction based on MRU. Still, the place of this method in the diagnostic algorithm of ureteropelvicalyceal dilatation with megaureter remains underestimated. Analysis of imaging findings in a group of children diagnosed with megaureter was done.Material and MethodsA retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance urography (MRU) was performed in 142 consecutive patients examined from January 2013 to September 2019. Twenty-five patients meeting the criteria of megaureter (dilatation more than 7 mm) in MRU were included in the further analysis. The MRU, ultrasound (US), and scintigraphy results were compared and analyzed together and compared with clinical data.ResultsThe sensitivity and specificity of US was comparable to the MRU in the assessment of upper urinary tract morphology (p > 0.05). In five out of 25 children, megaureter was found in each kidney; in a single case, both poles of a duplex kidney were affected. In the diagnosis of ureter ectopia, the MRU was superior to the US for which sensitivity did not exceed 16%. The US showed limited value in the diagnostics of segmental ureter dysplasia as a cause of primary megaureter when compared with MRU. Four cases were visualized in MRU studies, whereas the US examination was negative (all confirmed during surgery). There was a moderate correlation between relative renal function between fMRU and scintigraphy (t = 0.721, p = 0.477) and in the severity of obstruction assessment between both methods (r = 0.441, p < 0.05). However, in 10 kidneys with megaureter, the results in scintigraphy were inconclusive due to the signal from the megaureter imposing on the renal field.ConclusionsMRU seems to be a preferred method in the diagnostic algorithm for megaureter, providing both anatomical and functional information. MRU is superior to US and scintigraphy in diagnosing urinary tract anomalies with megaureter.

Treatment response is characterized by periodic remission rather than complete recovery. Compression methods currently used as part of complete decongestive therapy vary considerably in efficacy. Manual drainage, bandaging, and compression pumps are ineffective in everyday practice. Positive results have increasingly been reported where compression garments have been used as part of the treatment. This pilot study demonstrates a beneficial effect following the use of compression corsets in the treatment of edema in breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Material: A total of 35 women with BCRL were enrolled. Of these, 29 patients completed the study. Methods: Ultrasound (B-mode) was used to evaluate lymphedema in the side of the chest after mastectomy. This test was performed three times at a specific site on the operated side and symmetrically on the opposite side. Subsequently, patients were fit with an appropriate compression corset. The data were then statistically analyzed. Conclusion: After the surgical treatment of breast cancer, lymphatic fluid reservoirs may form at the side of the chest. The use of carefully selected compression corsets is an effective treatment for BCRL. Corsets are an important item, which we recommend should be included in compression clothing sets. We anticipate this finding will form the foundation for further work on the use of modern compression garments for the treatment of BCRL as well as contribute to the limited number of published reports that exist on the subject.
SummaryAmyloidosis is a clinical condition caused by deposition of various protein fibrills in extracellular space. The presented symptoms depend on the type of deposits and the organ or organs involved. The correct diagnosis is often difficult, due to lack of nonivasive imaging techniques and insufficiency of morphological imaging procedures delievered by radiology. We presented a list of potential radiopharmaceuticals that can be used in detecting various types of amyloidoses. 123I-SAP proved to have high sensitivity in imaging of AA and AL amyloidosis in visceral organs. 99mTc-Aprotinin was found to be useful in detecting cardiac amyloidosis. A couple of classical radiotracers, such as 201Tl, 123I-mIBG, together with 111In-antimyosin were also tested for accuracy in cardiac imaging, however the main problem was low specificity. Potential applicability was also found in case of some bone-seeking agents and other radiotracers, e.g. 67Ga-citrate and 99mTc-penta-DMSA. High sensitivity and specificity was achieved with β2-microglobulin labeled with 131I or 111In. Among PET tracers, 11C-PIB deserves more attention, because it may have an important role in diagnosing of AD in the near future. Further clinical studies are expected to take place, because noninvasive diagnosing and monitoring of amyloidosis is still a challenge.
(1) Background: Due to insufficient knowledge of lipoedema, the treatment of this disease is undoubtedly challenging. However, more and more researchers attempt to incorporate the most effective lipoedema treatment methods. When assessing a new therapeutic method, choosing correct, objective tools to measure the therapeutic outcome is very important. This article aims to present possible instruments that may be used in the evaluation of therapeutic effects in patients with lipoedema. (2) Methods: The data on therapeutic outcome measurements in lipoedema were selected in February 2022, using the Medical University of Gdansk Main Library multi-search engine. (3) Results: In total, 10 papers on this topic have been identified according to inclusion criteria. The tools evaluating the therapeutic outcomes used in the selected studies were: volume and circumference measurement, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, ultrasonography and various scales measuring the quality of life, the level of experiencing pain, the severity of symptoms, functional lower extremity scales, and a 6 min walk test. (4) Conclusion: The tools currently used in evaluating the effectiveness of conservative treatment in women with lipoedema are: volume and circumference measurement, waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, ultrasonography, VAS scale, quality of life scales (SF-36, RAND-36), symptom severity questionnaire (QuASiL), Lower Extremity Functional Scale and 6 min walk. Choosing a proper tool to measure the treatment outcome is essential to objectively rate the effectiveness of therapeutic method.
