We demonstrate that a politically conservative attitude toward CSR is contingent on environmental clues provided by two types of social capital: interfirm and community-based. Whereas the former enhances the negative relationship between political conservatism and CSR, the latter mitigates it and may even lead to a positive relationship.10.5465/AMBPP.2019.194
CONCLUSIONWe have developed and empirically tested a theoretical framework that untangles the complex relationship between political ideology and CSR that is described in the existing literature. We conclude that political conservatism does not always decrease firms' commitment to CSR but also has a "soft side" which may ultimately support firms' commitment to CSR.
