In this paper, techniques from the research ®eld of knowledge management are used to improve the maturity of the Computer Based Training (CBT) development process at an IT-oriented organization involved in producing courseware. The project team is facilitated with a knowledge-sharing solution that enables them to unambiguously de®ne their project process, and link templates and best practices to the activities in that process. In addition, a virtual discussion room is provided for them to share new insights. Results from measurement experiments indicate more positive project experiences with projects that used the knowledgesharing solution.
PROBLEM ANALYSISOf all software engineering activities, the production of courseware is amongst the most complex (Gery, 1987;Lynch, 1993). This is chie¯y because of the multidisciplinary nature of the project team (which makes communication signi®cantly more complex than in, say, regular IT projects) and the complexity of the integration of all media to ®t the needs of the target audience (i.e., use of the`state-of-the-art' vs.`what is ®tting for the user') (England & Finney, 1996;Van der Mast, 1995).Much of the existing literature on courseware development focuses primarily on how the Computer Based Training (CBT) product worked, works or should work for the user. Less research results are available on the quality of the courseware development process itself, although some do
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
