Due to the expected decline in the working-age population, especially in European countries, people with disabilities are now more often recognized as a valuable resource in the workforce and research into disability and employment is more important than ever. This paper outlines the state of affairs of research on disability and employment. We thereby focus on one particular group of people with disabilities, that is to say people with mental disabilities. We define disability according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) of the World Health Organization, by that recognizing that disability results from the interaction of person and environment. Key issues, including the complexity of defining disability, the legal situation in Europe and North America concerning disability at work, and barriers and enablers to employment, are discussed. For each of the topics we show important findings in the existing literature and indicate where more indepth research is needed. We finalize with a concrete research agenda on disability and employment and provide recommendations for practice.
Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) is one of the most important methods for assessing biodegradation activities in contaminated aquifers. Although the concept is straightforward, the proof that the method cannot be only used for a qualitative analysis but also to quantify biodegradation in the subsurface was missing. We therefore performed a multitracer test in the field with ring-deuterated (d5) and completely (d8) deuterium-labeled toluene isotopologues (400 g) as reactive tracers as well as bromide as a conservative tracer. The compounds were injected into the anoxic zone of a BTEX plume located down-gradient of the contaminant source. Over a period of 4.5 months the tracer concentrations were analyzed at two control planes located 24 and 35 m downgradient of the injection well. Deuterium-labeled benzylsuccinate was found in the aquifer, indicating the anaerobic biodegradation of deuterated toluene via the benzylsuccinate synthase pathway. Three independent methods were applied to quantify biodegradation of deuterated toluene. First, fractionation of toluene-d8 and toluene-d5 using the Rayleigh equation and an appropriate laboratory-derived isotope fractionation factor was used for the calculation of the microbial decomposition of deuterated toluene isotopologues (CSIA-method). Second, the biodegradation was quantified by the changes of the concentrations of deuterated toluene relative to bromide. Both methods gave similar results, implying that the CSIA-method is a reliable tool to quantify biodegradation in contaminated aquifers. The results of both methods yielded a biodegradation of deuterated toluene isotopologues of approximately 23-29% for the first and 44-51% for the second control plane. Third, the mineralization of deuterated toluene isotopologues was verified by determination of the enrichment of deuterium in the groundwater. This method indicated that parts of deuterium were assimilated into the biomass of toluene degrading microorganisms.
Vocational rehabilitation services have been implemented in a number of countries to facilitate the return to work of sick and injured workers, yet little research has been undertaken to document competencies required to provide services globally. This study compared the job tasks, functions, and knowledge domains deemed important by Australian and German rehabilitation professionals working in vocational rehabilitation settings to identify common practice domains. An online survey comprising items from the Rehabilitation Skills Inventory–Amended and the International Survey of Disability Management was completed by 149 Australian and 217 German rehabilitation professionals. Items from each measure were submitted to factor analysis, using principal axis factoring as the extraction technique. Three common domains were identified: (a) vocational counseling, (b) workplace disability case management, and (c) workplace intervention and program management. Differences in skill and knowledge domains centered on the levels of specialization in vocational rehabilitation practices in each country. Ongoing transnational research is required to ensure that a “global curriculum” covers core competencies, while at the same time allowing for specialization at a local level.

Der Gesetzgeber sieht dafür zahlreiche Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten vor, deren Inanspruchnahme Betroffene jedoch vor ein Etikettierungs-Ressourcen-Dilemma mit Angst vor Stigmatisierung stellen kann. Bei der Lösung dieses Dilemmas spielt die Unternehmenskultur eine zentrale Rolle.
