Objectives: The structure, process, and outcomes associated with planning, developing, and offering an interprofessional course on the foundations of patient safety is described, including how organizational, structural, cultural, and attitudinal barriers were overcome. Methods: Seventeen faculty members from 7 colleges and schools and medical center participatedVfrom the fields of decision sciences and systems, dentistry, medicine, law, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, social work, health care administration, and outcomes management in health systems. Student assessment included theme analysis of open-ended questions, descriptive analysis of multipleY response option questionnaires, and criterionbased assessment of student performance on case studies. Triangulation of student comments, final course evaluation, and student performance evaluations were performed to learn overarching themes of student experience with the course. Results: The students learned a different way of thinking, found the instructional design and active learning methods useful to learning, and felt prepared to solve problems in the future. Students believed that the content was an essential core knowledge for all health professionals (87%) and should be required for all health professions students (78%). Students achieved an application level of learning (77%) within the cognitive domain and the valuing level within the affective domain. Students agree (96%) that they can define and apply the basic principles and tenets of patient safety, including identification of tools needed to work effectively within the health system and to improve safety and strongly agree (100%) that they value patient safety as a professional practice framework. Conclusion: The universitywide implementation case may offer important lessons to others nationally in health care education.
This study compared mothers', fathers', nurses', and physicians' perceptions of parents' reactions to stressful stimuli when their children were hospitalized. Thirty-six mothers, 14 fathers, 27 nurses, and 23 physicians rated 36 stressful stimuli on an inventory the investigators developed. Analysis of Variance and subsequent multiple comparison tests disclosed numerous differences between parents and health care professionals and between mothers and fathers on the Parental Uncertainty, Annoyance, Child Discomfort, and Negative Emotional States Scales. Further analyses of ratings on individual items from the scales revealed the bases of the differences. Implications for health professionals and directions for further research are discussed.
Using web-based discussion as a teaching strategy: bioethics as an exemplar Nurses are required to be competent in the area of bioethics based on several accreditation standards. Bioethics courses are one strategy to develop such a competency. Bioethics education itself has various goals including the need to engage in discussion and the ability to debate diverse issues. Providing an educational experience that meets both disciplinary and topic needs can be challenging. On-line conferencing through WebBoard 3.0, a web-based discussion software program, within a graduate level bioethics course successfully contributed to meeting these needs. A technical description of the WebBoard is provided in the following discussion along with a description of the integration of this device into a bioethics course. The WebBoard conferencing allowed all students to enter the class discussion and especially facilitated discussion for reticent speakers and distance learners. Evaluations of the bioethics course from both the faculty and students' perspectives were generally positive. Most students found the technique easy to use and liked the asynchronous format that allowed them to read and contribute at any hour of the day or night. Despite the labour intensive nature of this experience, the strategy ensured participation by every student, a major goal of the project. Developing an interdisciplinary situation would increase the value of such an experience.
The purpose of this pilot study was to compare embedded audio feedback (EAF), which faculty provided using the iPad(®) application iAnnotate(®) PDF to insert audio comments and written feedback (WF), inserted electronically on student papers in a series of writing assignments. Goals included determining whether EAF provides more useful guidance to students than WF and whether EAF promotes connectedness among students and faculty. An additional goal was to ascertain the efficiency and acceptance of EAF as a grading tool by nursing faculty. The pilot study was a quasi-experimental, cross-over, posttest-only design. The project was completed in an Informatics in Health Care course. Faculty alternated the two feedback methods on four papers written by each student. Results of surveys and focus groups revealed that students and faculty had mixed feelings about this technology. Student preferences were equally divided between EAF and WF, with 35% for each, and 28% were undecided.
