The profiles of dog and cat tutors participating in a pet neutering campaign in Teresina (Piauí, Brazil) were evaluated using questionnaire surveys. The majority of participants were observed to be people with higher levels of educational attainment who mainly decided to neuter their animals to avoid unwanted pets, prevent access to the street, and prevent disease. There was no early neutering, which is desirable for disease prevention. The majority of participants were female, with more cats than dogs represented. It was concluded that the level of education of owners is a determinant in the health and welfare of their pets, demonstrating the need for educational campaigns.
The objective of this report was to record surgical procedures performed in 241 dogs in a teaching veterinary hospital. There were 40 elective surgical procedures (16.6%) and 201 therapeutic surgical procedures (83.4%). The most frequent procedure was ovariohysterectomy (OH), 65% (26/40) and 24.38% (49/201), respectively, for elective and therapeutic surgical procedures. Among therapeutic surgical procedures were registered fracture reduction (16.91%, 34/201), mastectomies (13.93%, 28/201), drainage of the otohematoma (12.94%; 26/201) and ophthalmic surgical procedures (5.47%, 11/201). The high percentage of therapeutic surgical procedures conducted demonstrates the complexity of the cases attended daily in a teaching veterinary hospital.
Palavras chave: dentes, felino, ferida lingual, trauma Lactative tongue wound and tooth loss in a cat: Case report ABSTRACT. Cats are often subject to trauma due to behavioral habits; however, cases involving traumas involving the tongue are rare, probably due to the intraoral position of such organ. Due to this rarity, we describe the case of a feline attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Piauí with oral trauma, which caused dental loss and lingual laceration wound. Simple suture was made to approximate the lingual borders. The animal presented good recovery and on the first postoperative day showed an appetite to ingest pasturage foods. The lingual wound of this cat quickly reepithelialized, a condition provided by the good vascularization of the oral cavity.
Sapajus libidinosus is a species of primates, popularly known as capuchin monkey. The oral cavity of the monkeys may have pathogenic microbiota for human. Therefore, the study of the microbiota of these species is of great interest in unique health. The objective of the present article was to carry out a survey of the oral microbiota of Sapajus libidinosus, kept in captivity, in the Zoobotanical Park of Teresina (PI, Brazil). Ten chemically immobilized primates were used. Samples were collected from the oral mucosa along the maxillary muco-gingival transition, and these samples were sent to culture and microbiological identification. Most of the microorganisms found were Gram negative and E.coli was the most frequent, followed by Enterobacter spp, Klebsiella spp, Proteus mirabilis, Citrobacter spp.,Morganella morganii, as well as Gram positive bacteria of the type Staphylococcus spp. The data obtained demonstrated the presence of bacterial strains with potential risk of transmission to other animals kept in the park as well as humans in contact with these animals.
