The recent promotion and adoption of digital game-based learning (DGBL) in K-12 education presents compelling opportunities as well as challenges for early childhood educators who seek to critically, equitably and holistically support the learning and play of today's so-called digital natives. However, with most DGBL initiatives focused on the increasingly standardized 'accountability' models found in K-12 educational institutions, the authors ask whose priorities, identities and notions of play this model reinforces or neglects. Drawing on the literatures of early childhood studies, game-based learning, and game studies, they seek to illuminate the informal contexts of play within the 'hidden' and 'null' curricula of DGBL that do not fit within the efficiency models of mainstream education in North America. In the absence of a common critical or theoretical foundation for DGBL, they propose a conceptual framework that challenges what they regard to be the institutionally nullified dimensions of autonomy, play, affinity and space that are essential to DGBL. They contend that these dimensions are ideally situated within the inclusive and play-based curriculum early childhood learning environments, and that the early years constitute a critically significant, yet overlooked, location for more holistic and inclusive thinking on DGBL.Keywords: DGBL; digital game-based learning; early childhood education; videogames; situated learning; hidden and null curriculum; critical pedagogy Introduction Children aged 3-10 represent the largest demographic of the virtual worlds and online games (Kzero, 2011) they themselves choose to engage with and identify as significant to them (de Castell & Jenson, 2004). The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) and explicit measures were used with 21 college students to determine if body weight of target stimuli (photographic images of slim and overweight individuals) influenced perceptions of intelligence. The explicit measure was a computerized adaptation of the Anti-Fat Attitudes Questionnaire designed to reduce participant error. A Covert Perception Task was developed as an additional explicit measure in which participants rated the likelihood of success of slim and overweight job applicants. Correlational analyses were used to determine if disparity between current and idealized body mass index (BMI) influenced responding. Statistical analyses were applied to data to determine influence exerted by the gender of participants and/or by the gender of the portrayed target stimuli. Findings are discussed in relation to pro-slim versus anti-fat bias and gender differences in bodyweight bias related to participants and targets.
The ongoing work by educators responding to calls for equity, diversity, and inclusion in music education shows the breadth of difficult work that has been accomplished as well as the challenging work that lies ahead. Our work explores efforts to rethink music education—for all—from the ground up, which requires disrupting many of the norms through which music education has been conventionally understood. In this article, we bring together lessons learned to offer five recommendations for music pedagogy and sound-based inquiry that support a more inclusive understanding of music—one that situates aural/sound/music learning experiences as actively critical and collaborative practices. We suggest that by developing a contextualized, community-based, learner-oriented model, we might be better equipped to create opportunities for all learners.
