Unlike many other contemporary Latin American writers, whose work is often characterized by universal influences and themes, Guatemalan literary tradition seems to dominate in the work by Dante Liano (Chimaltenango, 1948). This point will be argued in this article through a study of the intertextuality in his 1996 novel El misterio de San Andre´s. By fictionalizing the dictatorship of Jorge Ubico (1931)(1932)(1933)(1934)(1935)(1936)(1937)(1938)(1939)(1940)(1941)(1942)(1943)(1944) and the 1944 Revolution, El misterio's central issue is the discordant relationship between Amerindian and Occidental culture. On the bases of textual, paratextual and metatextual references three main influences, all of them Guatemalan, can be detected: Miguel Á ngel Asturias, 1967 Nobel Prize in Literature, Luis Cardoza y Aragón, poet and essayist and Rigoberta Menchú, 1992 Nobel Peace Prize. My aim is to understand-explain why Liano, who lives in Italy since the early eighties, continues to invoke and promote Guatemalan literary tradition. This article will also deal with the lack of critical interest in Central American literature.
