A new species of Brycon is described from the Atlantic slope of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Brycon costaricensis n. sp. differs from all other Central American Brycon species by the following combination of characters: 49 to 54 scales in the lateral line; 5 or 6 rows of scales between lateral line and pectoral fin base; 9 to 11 rows of scales between lateral line and dorsal fin base; 5 to 7 rows of scales between lateral line and anal fin base; anal fin notably longer than head, with 33 to 37 total rays; and a elongated and shallow caudal peduncle, whose length is 1.78 to 2.35 times its depth. A key to lower Mesoamerican species of the genus is also presented.
Two Achirus mazatlanus with record lengths of 218 and 230 mm total length were observed, a 12 and 24 mm increase over the previous mark for this species.
RESUMEN:El esqueleto caudal constituye una importante herramienta para evaluar las relaciones ancestro-descendencia de los peces teleósteos. Por tal motivo, se realizó un análisis osteológico comparativo de dicha estructura, a partir de ejemplares de las especies Achirus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758) y A. mazatlanus (Steindachner, 1869), obtenidos de colecciones científicas de referencia y recolectados in situ en Veracruz y Baja California Sur (México). Los organismos fueron identificados con claves taxonómicas especializadas y procesados mediante la técnica de aclaración y tinción diferencial, para evaluar las posibles similitudes o diferencias en las estructuras que componen al complejo caudal. Achirus lineatus y A. mazatlanus se caracterizan por la presencia de una fórmula caudal compuesta por 1 epural + 5 hipurales + 1 parahipural, además de una espina neural y dos espinas hemales; así como por la presencia de 16 radios principales y la ausencia de los radios procurrentes y el uroneural. Asimismo, se observo que en la especie A. lineatus, los hipurales se encuentran más cercanos uno del otro; sin embargo, en lo general, no se aprecio una clara diferencia en los elementos que componen la aleta caudal de las especies bajo estudio. Por consiguiente A. lineatus y A. mazatlanus son consideradas como especies fraternas.
We present a comprehensive and update checklist systematic of the icthyofauna of this insular region, which is comprised by 366 species, 241 genera, 101 families, 28 orders and tree classes. The families with the most richness specific were: Carangidae (20 spp.), Serranidae (19) and Muraenidae (18). Socorro Island was recorded 220 species, Clarion Island 179, San Benedicto Island 128; followed by Roca Partida Island 62. This diversity as well as endemic species number is relationship with the surface of each island. There is a higher similarity ictiofaunistic between Clarion Island and Socorro Island; while, the lowest similarity was between San Benedicto Island and Roca Partida Island. The ichthyogeography of the Revillagigedo Archipelago has a higher affinity with the Panamic province (42.3%), followed by the Cortes (41.5%). A higher number of species are of the wide distribution (circumglobal: 21 %; amphipacific 22.4 %). Also, endemic species are represented by 26 species (7.1%).
