Late and Epi-Palaeolithic sequences are well known from field work and publications in southeast Europe and the Levant. Current research in Anatolia promises to shed new light on the vast region that connects these two areas. At Öküzini cave a detailed sequence of Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene assemblages contributes greatly to our understanding.
The following is a preliminary account of the recent excavations at Karain Cave (Turkey). The top of the sequence contains Epipalaeolithic industries that appear to be disturbed. Below these are various Mousterian levels containing prepared hearths, and which rest on a calcitic crust dated to approximately 120,000 BP. Beneath this crust, and continuing for about twelve more metres, are more industries which are very rich and of Middle Paleolithic aspect. As a group the Mousterian levels are technically similar to Zagros Mousterian assemblages and comparable typologically to fades from the Balkans. Toward the middle of the sequence the industry changes, with a disappearance of faceted platforms and Levallois technique. The base of the sequence is marked by « Clactonian » assemblages. Some human teeth that were found are apparently attributable to Neandertals.
Résumé La place Saint-Lambert à Liège, riche d’une histoire de la recherche centenaire, souffre d’un déficit de fouilles programmées. Les investigations menées entre août 2005 et avril 2007 au sein de l’« archéoforum » ont permis de palier quelque peu ces lacunes. Le type architectural du bâtiment romain est à présent reconnu. Il s’agit d’une villa au plan standard, centrée autour d’une salle centrale et pourvue de pavillons d’angle. Une attention accrue a été apportée au dialogue entre les choix architecturaux et les contraintes de la topographie locale. À ce titre, l’implantation de la villa en podium fait partie d’un programme de « mise en scène » du bâtiment dans le paysage. Enfin, en l’absence de contextes stratigraphiques suffisamment préservés, la question de l’évolution du bâtiment est abordée par le biais des techniques de maçonnerie.
