The automotive troubleshooting unfolds from the system phase to the multiple-domain phase. It is necessary that different field members, for example, system and domain engineers, cooperate tightly toward an integrated product service process. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to generate a knowledge management platform for the overall automotive troubleshooting service. Besides, general ontologies, automotive troubleshooting service ontology (ATSO), is also created as a helpful tool for the communication of heterogeneous systems. This proposed approach of automotive collaborative troubleshooting is explained with the corresponding meta-model. The main contribution of this research is to assure the traceability in both system and domain phases by structuring knowledge. Eventually, an application is illustrated in enhancing re-usability in the region of automotive braking system in collaborative environment.
Purpose
This study aims to develop a synthetic knowledge repository consisted of interrelated Web Ontology Language.
Design/methodology/approach
The ontology composes the main framework to categorize data of product life cycle with eco-design mode (PLC-EDM) and automatically infer specialists’ knowledge for data confirmation, eventually assisting the utilizations and generation of strategies toward decision-making
Findings
(i) utilization of a novel model with ontology mode for information reuse cross the different eco-design applications; (ii) generation of a sound platform toward life cycle evaluation; and (iii) implementation of the PLC-EDM model along the product generation process.
Research limitations/implications
It cannot substitute an evaluation tool of life cycle. Certainly, this model does not predict the “target and range” and/or the depiction of the “utility module” that are basic activities in life cycle assessments as characterized through the international organization for standardization regulations.
Practical implications
As portion of this framework, a prototype Web application is presented which is applied to produce, reuse and verify knowledge of product life cycle.
Social implications
By counting upon the ontology, the information conducted by the utilization is certainly semantically represented to promote the data sharing among various participants and tools. Besides, the data can be verified against possible faults by inferring over the ontology. Hence, a feasible way to a popular topic in the domain of eco-design applications extension in the industry.
Originality/value
The goals are: to lean on rigid modeling principles; and to promote the interoperability and diffusion of the ontology toward particular utilization demands.
Scheme processes about complicated engineering systems are certainly complex on account of the interdependencies among submodules in the same tier and between tiers of a segmented hierarchy. In the design process with decision mode, this effects in communications among groups of design decisions. It is important to extract and represent the knowledge relevant to the decision communications for developing design process with decision mode. There are two critical issues addressed regarding the modeling of communications: decision types and these are made in various tiers. To stress the above two issues, there are several fundamental communication models defined among decisions in this study. Meanwhile, a presented ontology to identify the knowledge connected with these communication models. Critical benefits of the ontology involve that a hierarchical communications between decisions can be extracted, and a decision task-flows with accessible, adaptable, and implementable features for developing more complex systems can be generated. The applicability of the ontology is shown by scheme for an automotive braking troubleshooting service example.
