The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes and opinions of police officers contemplating retiring from police service regarding the utilization of post secondary or higher education as a means to prepare for second careers. Twenty patrol officers from a major metropolitan police agency of approximately 4,000 sworn officers were selected randomly and interviewed. The respondents had between fifteen and twenty years of service, were of the patrol officers rank and did not have a college degree.Recommendations for institutions of higher education, police unions and police departments are suggested based on the information gained during the interviews.
