Summary Regular seafood consumption plays a protective role against chronic conditions and obesity, which account for the majority of the burden of disease in Australia. Despite public health recommendations, Australians consume less than the recommended levels of omega‐3s (n‐3) to reduce the risk of chronic disease. The best source of long‐chain n‐3 is oil‐rich fish. This paper reports on results from a community survey on attitudes and patterns of seafood consumption conducted in a coastal town in Western Australia. Data were collected through a self‐administered questionnaire and 300 valid responses were received (60.7% aged 55 years or over; 65.7% female). Weekly patterns of seafood consumption were observed. Almost all participants (93.7%) thought seafood was an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. Overall, participants (73.3%) did not perceive seafood as inconvenient to prepare, and had a high level of confidence around cooking and serving seafood. There were no gender or age differences in confidence except for those aged under 30 years with only a third (36.4%) expressing confidence in cooking and serving. All participants, across all ages and genders (78.7–90.7%) made informed decisions when purchasing seafood and they sought more point‐of‐sale information. They identified affordability, availability, easy‐to‐understand food labels and quick‐and‐easy recipes at point of purchase as the main enablers towards increased seafood consumption.
Seafood as a whole food is highly nutritious. It is an important dietary source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and a wide array of highly bioavailable micronutrients. Despite the established health benefits associated with fish and seafood consumption, in Australia consumption levels still remain below those recommended for health. Although considerable research has been carried out on enablers and barriers to seafood consumption, the reasons Australian consumers do not consume recommended amounts of seafood while stating they would like to consume more seafood are complex and have not been fully illuminated. This paper reports on the development and results of a self-administered questionnaire that aimed to identify consumer perceptions and preferences for fresh and frozen seafood. Data were collected through intercept surveys at an Australian university and 239 valid responses were received. Results confirmed respondent preference for fresh fish and seafood. There was significant confusion among respondents about what constitutes fresh seafood, with the term 'fresh' having different meanings to different respondents. Over half of respondents understood the term fresh to relate to seafood having been caught that same day. In comparison, approximately 15% understood fresh to reflect the accepted definition of having never been frozen. Additionally, results indicated respondents find it difficult to recognize if seafood is fresh, particularly in comparison with other meats. There is significant potential for the development of regulations for labelling of unpackaged seafood in order to allow consumers to make informed decisions about their purchases.
BACKGROUND: UK Royal Air Force fast jet aircrew use three different anti-G systems, however, little objective comparison of the G protection they provide exists. The G-protection afforded by each system and associated hemodynamic responses were investigated.METHODS: Ten subjects performed centrifuge acceleration exposures using Mk-10 (S1) and Mk-4 (S2) five-bladder anti-G trousers (AGT) and full coverage AGT plus pressure breathing for G-protection (PBG; S3). Measurements of relaxed G tolerance (RGT), eye-level blood pressure (BPeye), lower body blood volume (LBV), stroke volume (SV) and total peripheral resistance (TPR) were made during gradual onset runs (GOR) and rapid onset runs (ROR). The subjective effort required to maintain clear vision at +7 and +8 Gz provided an indication of the protection provided by the system.RESULTS: All systems moderated decreases in SV and BPeye and increases in LBV under increased +Gz. S3 provided the greatest mean RGT during GOR (+6.2 Gz) and ROR (+6 Gz), reduced the effort required to maintain clear vision at up to +8 Gz, prevented venous pooling and afforded the greatest rise in TPR. The majority of indices revealed no difference between S1 and S2 although RGT during the ROR was greater with S2 (+0.25 Gz).DISCUSSION: S3 effectively prevented pooling of blood in the lower limbs under +Gz, despite the use of PBG, and offers an advantage over five-bladder AGT. Given the similarities of S1 and S2, it was unsurprising that the majority of indices measured were similar.
