Tests on internally unstable sandy gravels show that a significant proportion of the sand content is washed out by piping at hydraulic gradients far lower than the critical gradient given by a classical theory. The probable explanation is that a major part of the overburden load is carried on a framework of gravel particles, leaving the sand under relatively small pressures. By contrast, piping of the sand from stable sandy gravels occurs at approximately the full theoretical gradient. The tests broadly confirm Kenney's criterion for the internal stability of granular materials.
