Purpose – Developing ambidexterity as a dynamic capability is important for firms to sustain their competitive advantage. Moreover, this capability allows firms to build the resiliency to mitigate enterprise risks. The purpose of this paper is to apply two main theoretical frames from the strategy literature, dynamic capabilities, and organizational ambidexterity, to supply chain management (SCM) to examine mitigation strategies for supply chain (SC) disruptions. The authors empirically investigated how the firm’s SC ambidexterity is developed through a dynamic capability-building process and how this, in turn, can mitigate the negative impact of SC disruptions and improve business performance. Design/methodology/approach – This study conducted a field survey to answer the research questions as there exists no archival database with detailed information on ambidextrous SC strategies and dynamic capability. A total of 316 usable responses were received from managers working in the SC area. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were run on SPSS (version 16.0) and AMOS (version 18.0) to test the hypotheses to answer research questions. Findings – Overall, the results of the study confirmed that a dynamic SC capability-building process is an antecedent of SC ambidexterity, and that SC ambidexterity is important to firms as it mitigate the negative impact of SC disruptions and enhance business performance. To take advantage of an ambidextrous SC, through minimizing the negative impact of SC disruptions and maximizing firm performance, firms should continually search for creative ways to satisfy new market needs and adapt to the fast changing business environment. Originality/value – This study applied a dynamic capability-building process and ambidexterity to SCM. From the resilient SC perspective, the study found that the ability to effectively utilize existing resources and create novel strategies for problem solving plays a critical role in addressing SC disruptions.
This study investigated the financial performances of environmental policy by using the long-term effect of ISO 14001 certification. Drawing on a natural-resource-based view of the firm, this study examined abnormal performances of ISO 14001 certified firms on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) in the USA during the period 1996-2010 employing a rigorous event study methodology. The results indicate that the profitability variables showed immediate positive abnormal effects after firms applied for the ISO 14001 certification, while the market benefit variable showed gradual improvements after obtaining the certification. However, ISO 14001 did not show significant effect on the internal process improvement. Overall, ISO 14001 was found beneficial to the firm in the long run from the perspectives of profitability and market benefits.
Digital transformation has influenced value chain operations of both manufacturing and service firms. This study examined digital transformation in the service sector through network text analysis of 330 related articles published during the past 10 years. The selected papers’ keyword link relations were analyzed to create network maps of research topics, ranging from traditional to emerging ideas of researchers. Dominant research topics and their clusters were identified using centrality and community analyses, and research trends were identified. The results of this study will help researchers and practitioners in the relevant fields capture the overall picture of the field.
Purpose – This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between the directions of pressures affecting green supply chain management (GSCM) and supply chain (SC) performance. Design/methodology/approach – This research is based on a survey because there is no archival database providing detailed information on GSC practices and performance. A survey questionnaire was developed to collect research data, based on the GSC literature and a pilot study in the field. The authors developed hypotheses based on two theories: institutional theory and the resource-based view (RBV). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to test the hypotheses with SPSS (16.0) and AMOS (5.0). Findings – The results confirmed the importance of implementing environmental SC practices to sustain organizations' competitive advantage and performance. Increased SC flexibility helped reduce resources, through decreased cost factors and improved output. Enterprises with environmental SC policies tended to increase SC flexibility and, hence, enhanced profits. Originality/value – This paper applies organizational theories to GSCM by extending the institutional-versus-internal-pressure construct to the way enterprises implement GSC strategies for sustainable SC.
Researchers have defined resilient supply chain management in various ways and have analyzed and explained it using many managerial theories. Thus, identifying trends in existing studies could serve as a foundation for future supply chain resilience studies. However, despite the accumulation of a wide body of literature on resilient supply chains, few studies have analyzed the research trends systematically. Therefore, the present study aimed to synthesize and summarize research trends in the supply chain resilience domain using network analysis. The Scopus database and Google Scholar were used to search for research articles on supply chain resilience. We conducted an analysis by visually representing coauthorship, cocitation, PageRank, and keyword networks for 825 research articles and 1725 authors. This study identified the main topics, key articles, and major author groups of supply chain resilience research. The findings are expected to help expand the scope of research to a wide range of subfields in supply chain resilience research in the future.
