Introduction The incidents of violence against doctors, leading to grievous injury and even death, seem to be on an increasing trend in recent years. There is a paucity of studies on workplace violence against doctors and its effect, in India. The present study was conducted to assess workplace violence faced by doctors, its effect on the psycho-social wellbeing of the treating doctor and, subsequently, on patient management.
BACKGROUND: India is in the intermediate hepatitis B virus endemicity zone with hepatitis B surface antigen prevalence among the general population ranges from 2% to 8%. Among health-care workers, seroprevalence is two to four times higher than that of the general population. AIM: The aim of the study was done to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAPs) of medical students regarding hepatitis B. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted from March to April 2018. Students were invited to the department on specified dates for awareness and immunization against hepatitis B. Their KAP was assessed with the help of a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: With a response rate of 81.3%, a total of 161 students participated in the study out of 198. Out of the 161 study participants, only 13 (8%) students had received a completed course of hepatitis B vaccination in the past, 30 (18.7%) students had a history of inability to complete the three doses of hepatitis B vaccination, and the rest 118 (73.3%) students were never immunized against hepatitis B. The knowledge about the risk of acquiring the disease at the hospital or high-risk setting was present in less than half of the students. The average knowledge score was 10.63 out of 16 and average healthy practice score was 2.94 out of 4. On applying Pearson correlation test, it was found that there was a positive correlation of knowledge and practices of the students (P = 0.012), implying that better knowledge of the disease has a positive effect on the practices exercised by an individual. CONCLUSION: Newly enrolled students and other individuals attached to a high-risk setting such as a medical institution should be screened for immunization status during initial medical examination as the number of unimmunized persons, especially against hepatitis B is high.
Introduction:To combat anemia among pregnant women, in Haryana, Northern India, administration of intravenous iron sucrose (IVIS) was initiated in 2014 as a public-health measure. We assessed the effect of IVIS on hemoglobin (Hb) levels among the pregnant anemic women.Methods:Pregnant women identified as moderately or severely anemic (Hb <10.0 g/dL) in the second or third trimester during routine antenatal care were prescribed IVIS in a standard-dose of 400 mg given as 100 mg on alternate days. Neither dose calculation, nor allowance for iron-store, was included in this study. We analyzed the data collected between June 2014 and December 2015, at the two primary-health-centers, on Hb level (by HemoCue method) before start of the therapy (baseline), and 4-week or more after the last infusion (endline).Results:A total of 990 women received IVIS. Both baseline and endline Hg-levels were available for 763 (77%), who were included in the analysis. At baseline, the proportion of moderate and severe anemia was 87.94% and 12.06%, respectively. Mean (standard deviation)-Hb increased from 7.85 g/dL (0.80) at baseline, to 9.62 g/dL (1.30) at endline, with a mean increase of 1.76 g/dL (95% confidence interval 1.67, 1.85). The mean increase in Hb-level for pregnant women who had severe and moderate anemia at baseline was 2.54 g/dL and 1.65 g/dL, respectively. Overall, 15.33% of women achieved normal Hb-level by the time of endline measurement. No serious adverse reactions were reported during the observation period.Conclusion:Mean increase in Hb-level was 1.76 mg/dL. Severely anemic pregnant women had larger increase in Hb-level when compared with pregnant women with moderate anemia.
Context: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the main causes of death due to infectious diseases worldwide. Multidrug resistance/rifampicin resistance (MDR/RR) TB remains a public health crisis. India has the highest burden of tuberculosis and multidrug resistant TB (MDR TB) in the world. There is wide geographical variation in the epidemic and its trends that can be updated by regular reporting and sound surveillance systems. The current study tries to fill this gap by analyzing the data of TB patients from a Tuberculosis Unit, studying socio-demographic and clinical profile from December 2017 to November 2019 in Nadia district of West Bengal. Aims: The aims of this work were to study socio-demographic and clinical profile of TB patients attending Tuberculosis Unit of West Bengal, and to find out factors associated with drug-resistant TB. Settings and Design: Record-based study from Tuberculosis Unit. Methods: Records of all patients who undergo CBNAAT in TU are stored as monthly unit. We randomly selected 10 months from a period of December 2017 to November 2019 by using lot method. Data of all patients undergoing CBNAAT at Kalyani – Gayeshpur Tuberculosis Unit during randomly selected 10 months were accessed. Statistical Analysis Used: Monthly data was entered in Microsoft Excel and descriptive tests of significance, proportions and Chi-square were applied. Results: There was male preponderance for testing of tuberculosis. Seven percent of the TB suspects were HIV positive. The positivity rate of MTB by CBNAAT was 23%. Four percent of the samples were Rifampicin resistance. Tobacco consumption, contact with TB case and Diabetes were common risk factors of TB. Most of the information was missing in the records. Conclusions: Most of Rifampicin Resistant cases showed very low Ct value in CBNAAT. Previous history of TB treatment and positive HIV status was significantly associated with RR TB. There is a need to capture complete information on the records of presumptive TB cases.
Background and Aims: Dengue is a vector-borne viral disease which is one of the major causes of public health problem in India, and its control is often the major challenges of municipal bodies in the country, especially in West Bengal. The previous outbreaks of the disease can be used to forecast the future occurrence and burden, so that authorities may optimize the available resources in order to contain and minimize the impact. Materials and Methods: Weekly disease outbreak data were extracted from Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme website and arranged as monthly data. Mann-Kendall test was used to determine the significance of the disease trends in various districts of Gangetic West Bengal. Time series analysis was done by using Seasonal ARIMA method to predict the number of Dengue outbreak cases for the year 2020. Results: Murshidabad was the only district of Gangetic West Bengal that had a significant upward Dengue cases outbreak trend. Nadia had a downward trend but it was not statistically significant. Model SARIMA (1,0,0) (1,0,0) 12 was chosen to forecast the Dengue outbreak cases which showed that the cases might start from the month of June, peak in August and wane off in October 2020. However, this prediction was not significant. Conclusion: Gangetic West Bengal might experience similar dengue cases as the previous year, but their numbers would be low. Only the district of Murshidabad would have upward trend. Knowledge in advance about periods of disease occurrence may enable health authorities to initiate control measures during the start of the outbreak season.
