Objectives: To develop an algorithm for evaluation and treatment of wounds and to test their internal reliability. Method: Crosssectional and descriptive study. For the construction of the algorithm, a review of the literature was realized with databases of health sciences and consultation of books and theses of this area published in the last 10 years, using as descriptors: acute and chronic wounds; wound evaluation; evaluation tools; dressings; nursing evaluation; wound healing and nursing care; and algorithms. Two hundred nurses with at least 12 months of experience in wound care were contacted and 38 of them completed the evaluation questionnaire. The internal consistency of the algorithm was measured by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results: All items evaluated had a "excellent" classification, being: graphic presentation (52.65%), readability (60.5%), sequence of the algorithm (52.6%), description of wound types (56.8%), description of tissue types (52.6%), presentation of types of exudate (57.9%), presentation of signs of infection (57.9%) and products to be used in dressing (50%). The algorithm presented excellent internal consistency (α = 0.911). According to 97.4% of the evaluations, the instrument is able to support health professionals in wounds evaluation. Conclusion:The algorithm showed internal reliability for evaluation and treatment of wounds.
Literature search was carried out with the descriptors: wounds and injuries; dressings; cicatrization. The following steps were followed: planning of content; selection of application tools; configuration of environments, tools and educational resources; building the Internet environment for downloading and installing the application on mobile devices. Results: fifteen articles were selected through literature search. The application has an easy-to-use graphical interface. It stores the patient's sociodemographic characteristics, allows assessment of the wound and risk factors and recommends therapeutic procedures. Conclusion: the application developed may be very useful in clinical practice, helping to select nursing interventions for wound prevention and treatment, as well as in nursing education. OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in body image in patients with surgical wound dehiscence. DESIGN AND SETTING: This cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study was conducted in a university hospital and nursing care center in Brazil. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION: Sixty-one adult surgical patients of both genders from different inpatient wards or receiving outpatient care were selected. Forty-one participants had surgical wound dehiscence, and 20 had achieved complete wound healing (controls). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination (BDDE), Body Investment Scale (BIS), and a questionnaire assessing clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients were used for data collection. MAIN RESULTS: Surgical wound dehiscence defects were 0.5 to 30 cm in length, located on the arms, legs, and chest. They were significantly associated with being white (P = .048), number of children (P = .024), and presence of comorbid conditions (P = .01). Overall, men reported higher BIS scores (positive feelings about the body) than women (P = .035). Patients with wound dehiscence had higher BDDE scores (negative body image) than controls (P = .013). The BDDE scores were associated with presence of surgical wound dehiscence (P = .013), number of children (P = .009), and wound length (P = .02). There were significant correlations between BIS scores in men with wound dehiscence (P = .042), number of children (P < .001), and BDDE scores (P < .001) and between BDDE scores and number of children (P = .031), wound length (P = .028), and BIS scores (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Surgical wound dehiscence had a negative impact on body image.
